A few years ago, Christy Hulsey was designing her best friend\u2019s wedding and decided to bring her young daughter along. \u201cI thought it would a good idea,\u201d said the owner of Colonial House of Flowers in Statesboro, Georgia. \u201cIt was not. All she wanted to do was touch the floral designs.\u201d<\/p>\n

To distract her daughter, Hulsey fashioned a halo out of flower cuttings on the crown and asked her to deliver the bouquet to the bride. The photographer snapped a shot of the precious moment\u00a0and posted it online.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomehow, a woman from Pottery Barn saw the picture and my name, so she looked me up to ask if they could use it on their blog,\u201d she said. A stunned Hulsey agreed, elated to have her daughter\u2019s photo (and her flowers) affiliated with one of the largest home companies in the entire world.<\/p>\n

It was only the beginning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A few days later, the woman called back. She\u2019d taken some time to check\u00a0out the Colonial Flowers\u2019 website<\/a> and loved what she saw. She invited Hulsey to be Pottery Barn\u2019s featured florist on its blog<\/a>, asking her to create designs in the company\u2019s products.<\/p>\n

\u201cI informed her that I\u2019m in a small town that\u2019s four and a half hours from the nearest Pottery Barn and didn\u2019t have access to the products,\u201d she said. \u201cShe told me not to worry\u2014to pick out my favorite pieces online and they\u2019d send them to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her two years<\/a> in this role, she\u2019s arranged flowers on a cake stand, in a driftwood lantern, a basket and \u00a0a giant cement shell, along with more traditional containers.\u00a0One who demurs from the spotlight, Hulsey prefers to feature her relatives, employees, and favorite stylists in her posts.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a hefty investment in time, but well worth it. \u201cOur shop website gets more visitors coming from Pottery Barn than anywhere else\u2014Facebook, Instagram, wedding sites like Style Me Pretty,\u201d she said. \u201cEven if they\u2019re just browsing, all those visitors help my SEO, so they\u2019re helping local customers find me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, it gives her instant cred with customers and other industry professionals. \u201cWhen you ask people to photograph your work for Potttery Barn<\/em>, their ears perk up. They pull out all the stops to make your flowers look as good as possible,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Her posts on front doors have created a niche specialty. “Our shop is known for this,” she said. “We decorate a ton of doors in Statesboro.”<\/p>\n

The blog posts have given Hulsey a platform to share her shop\u2019s story, helping her connect with customers on an emotional level. They\u2019ve also exposed her brand to people all over the world. \u201cWe ship nonperishable products, like candles, iPhone cases, bags, etc., and Pottery Barn has really helped us move inventory,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She describes that first phone call \u201cdivine intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came out of nowhere and was a game changer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She encourages other florists to reach out to the PR people at big brands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got the call, influencer marketing was pretty new, but now it\u2019s huge,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd brands like J Crew and Anthropologie use flowers in so much of their advertising because they\u2019re beautiful and everyone likes them.
