{"id":2136,"date":"2016-11-18T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/?p=2136"},"modified":"2016-11-18T10:53:14","modified_gmt":"2016-11-18T15:53:14","slug":"build-a-following-with-floral-workshops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/florists\/build-a-following-with-floral-workshops","title":{"rendered":"Build a Following with Floral Workshops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Guelph, Ontario, Robyn Scott is courting customers ready to deck the halls with a series of design workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next three weeks, the owner of Blooms &amp; Flora will offer hands-on lessons, priced at $95 to $135, for those interested in creating hand-tied bouquets, holiday urns, wreaths, wall hangings, mantle designs, and holiday centerpieces.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2135 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM-300x163.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-2-03-30-pm\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM-768x417.png 768w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM-400x217.png 400w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-2.03.30-PM.png 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is only our second season offering flower arranging workshops, so we are still changing and learning as we go,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>She started by hosting semi-private groups of six to eight people in the shop, which started to get cramped. Now she holds them in a restaurant around the corner. This lets her comfortably accommodate about 15 participants and makes it easy to offer refreshments (holiday goodies and mulled wine). \u201cI also welcome any opportunity to support fellow small business owners,\u201d she said. \u201c I love working with like-minded people, and this is a great way to do so!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, workshops attendees will receive a coupon to use for holiday d\u00e9cor or gifts. \u201cIt is a new idea, so we will track how it goes,\u201d Scott said. \u201cLast year, we made many new clients by creating a personal connection at our workshops and many have become very familiar faces in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomsandflora.com\">shop<\/a> throughout the year.\u201d Several, she added, sign up for a future class before the evening is through, \u201cas they have enjoyed themselves so much and caught the flower bug!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looks for little ways to plug gift ideas during the workshops. \u201cWe burn candles that we sell in the shop and find ways to mention in a natural way a few items and services that we offer,\u201d she said, adding that it\u2019s more comfortable and effective than a hard sale.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2138\" style=\"width: 404px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Peek Photography\" width=\"404\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-330x220.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michelle Peek Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The classes draw a mix; there are groups of women and others who show up solo. \u201cIt\u2019s a welcoming and comfortable environment,\u201d she said. \u201cThese are individuals who value community, continual learning, and a love for creating. Those who walk in the doors knowing no one leave with a handful of new flower friends. It&#8217;s so great to watch people complimenting each other&#8217;s designs and creativity and building up one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though attendees enjoy DIY projects, they still gravitate to Blooms &amp; Flora\u2019s professional services. \u201cWe\u2019re only touching on the basics of a very particular design in a two-hour class,\u201d Scott said. \u201cThey still come to us for cut-flower bouquets, arrangements for friends and family, gift items and gift cards, etc. By forming a connection with the workshops, we\u2019re top of mind when they need a professional florist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, she said, workshops help educate clients on the value and skills florists have that set them apart from big box stores. \u201cI am able to touch on the importance of quality and freshness in selecting flowers, flower varieties and their costs, and flower care to extend the life of their flowers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop clients are mostly \u201ccareer-focused professionals in their 30s through 50s\u2014and definitely not seeking a career in floral design,\u201d she said. \u201cIn a technology-driven world, I believe people are looking for a way to connect\u2014without their devices\u2014and learn a new skill. To take even a couple of hours to disconnect from their busy lives and work with beautiful flowers is such a refreshing change from their regular routines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She advises florists keen on starting design workshops to make sure they have adequate space to do so and a plan to market them. \u201cWe have an extensive list of subscribers from our website who receive our e-newsletter, which mentions upcoming dates. They had requested to be notified of workshops and, within a few days, many were completely booked up! Social media really helps to spread the word, as well.
