{"id":2471,"date":"2017-04-07T09:32:49","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T13:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/?p=2471"},"modified":"2017-04-07T09:54:59","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T13:54:59","slug":"floral-art-steals-show-raleigh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/news\/floral-art-steals-show-raleigh","title":{"rendered":"Floral Art Steals the Show in Raleigh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week in Raleigh, roughly 15,000 people saw flowers in a new light: as a gorgeous medium that can be molded into fine art.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17626515_10102838423788036_4197848553121884685_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2478 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17626515_10102838423788036_4197848553121884685_n-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the third year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/216685238365398\/\">AIFD Southern Chapter<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ncsfa2017\/\">North Carolina State Florists Association<\/a> collaborated with the <a href=\"http:\/\/ncartmuseum.org\/\">North Carolina Museum of Art<\/a> to present &#8220;Art in Bloom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The four-day affair, March 30-April 3, included\u00a0headline presentations by Hitomi Gilliam, AIFD, co-creator of the European Master Certification\u00a0and Shane O&#8217;Connolly, florist to the British royal family; three main-stage programs (on Ikebana, tabletops, and spring designs); hands-on workshops; lectures; and a fashion show.\u00a0Sponsors included Smithers-Oasis, Lihmil, Cleveland Plant and Flowers, Golden Flowers, Potomac Floral Wholesale, and Delaware Valley Floral.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vision for the festival was twofold:\u00a0 to have designers interpret art from their permanent collection into flowers and to have a series of speakers and demonstrations on various topics related to art and flowers,&#8221; said Teresa Godfrey, AIFD, president of the Southern Chapter.<\/p>\n<p>NCMA chose 45 items from its permanent collection to be interpreted in\u00a0flowers. The AIFD\u00a0Southern Chapter provided 22 designers to create designs displayed on pedestals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17554561_10206483799413638_8894682016088296744_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2473 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17554561_10206483799413638_8894682016088296744_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Artwork was assigned using a lottery system; each piece was assigned a number, which designers pulled from a basket.<\/p>\n<p><u><\/u>Designers received a package with a photo of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17626256_10206483720051654_1550833735981628008_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2474 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17626256_10206483720051654_1550833735981628008_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>artwork, information about the piece, a map of the museum, rules, and a timeline for installation and breakdown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The runway fashion show, &#8220;Horti-Couture: Floral Fashions by Tahiti&#8221; sold out, a first for NCMA at an Art in Bloom event. Sharon McGukin, AAF, AIFD, PFCI,\u00a0commentated while the audience ogled creative floral garb\u00a0by Francoise Weeks and others.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The audience was visibly engaged with the program as it unfolded,&#8221; McGukin said. &#8220;Botanical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17757564_10210600490421844_4048985653379858146_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2479 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17757564_10210600490421844_4048985653379858146_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>couture was obviously a new concept for many attendees. It was fun to watch their faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17426119_10208566534262739_1990953063292838993_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2475 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/17426119_10208566534262739_1990953063292838993_n-159x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>register surprise, pleasure, and awe. They clearly enjoyed the imaginative floral outfits presented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The florists&#8217; relationship with the museum has been amazing. &#8220;It&#8217;s their biggest fundraiser of the year,&#8221; Godfrey said. In 2015, they expected 700-1,000 attendees and got 10,000. This year, approximately 50 percent more people turned up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was fantastic PR for AIFD,&#8221; Godfrey said. (In fact, NCMA gave the Southern Chapter a $1,000 scholarship.) &#8220;Events like these really show off the scope of designers&#8217; talents. This makes people think of florists not as tradespeople, but as
