On St. Simon\u2019s Island, a sleepy barrier island off the coast of Southwest Georgia, sits a 600-acre estate with a stately plantation and cottages. The former home of philanthropist Nancy Reynolds (heiress of the R.J. Reynolds tobacco company) has hosted political heavyweights including President Jimmy Carter and Mikhail Gorbachev\u2014but not many non-celebrities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is super exclusive. Even brides who get married there have to stay somewhere else,\u201d said Christy Hulsey, owner of Colonial Flowers in Statesboro, Georgia. \u201cI had no idea! I just thought it was pretty with all the oak trees and Spanish moss, so I called them up and said, \u2018I want to host an event here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Hulsey\u2019s pitch worked. On December 5-6, she\u2019ll host \u201cMusgrove Master Class,\u201d a hands-on floral workshop led by renowned designer Susan McLeary.<\/p>\n

Priced at $1,895, the event covers accommodations and meals at Musgrove, floral supplies, instruction and a professional shoot by Corbin Gurkin<\/a>, whose work has been published in dozens of national magazines including Martha Stewart Weddings<\/em>, Unveiled<\/em>, Garden & Gun<\/em> and Vogue<\/em>. Charleston-based fashion stylist Lindsey Nowak, who has worked for Smitten<\/em> magazine and Monique Lhuillier, will help create unforgettable images that participants can use in their portfolio, website, and marketing materials.<\/p>\n

Additionally, there will be an editor from Southern Living<\/em> who will offer tips on how to effectively pitch magazines and get your designs published.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be a culmination of all my dreams,\u201d Hulsey said. \u201cThese are some of my absolute favorite designers that I\u2019ve admired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Event hostess Christy Hulsey has just finished her term as the 2017 Mayesh Design Star.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hulsey and McLeary met a few years ago at an event with the Chapel Designers<\/a> group and became quick friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cSue\u2019s actually the one who persuaded me to apply to be the Mayesh Design Sta<\/a>r,\u201d Hulsey said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t realize she was nervous about that. I was touched to learn my encouragement made a difference,\u201d McLeary said, adding that she\u2019s always admired Hulsey\u2019s artistic eye \u201cand the way she\u2019s rolled up her sleeves to revamp a traditional flower shop.\u201d<\/p>\n

McLeary will introduce her approach to wearable flowers. \u201cThey\u2019re very popular with customers right now and a lot of florists get intimidated thinking it\u2019s painstaking work,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll show that it\u2019s not! I\u2019m passionate about making things faster and easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sue McLeary, aka “Passionflower Sue,” is famous for creating show-stopping wearable flower designs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Participants will learn floral tattoos, shoulder corsages and cascade bouquets that don\u2019t require wiring or foam.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about creating an opulent look without expensive mechanics or time-consuming techniques,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

McLeary said she\u2019s blown away with the venue<\/a> and high-end professionals who\u2019ll be on site.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristy\u2019s really pulled together an incredible lineup, down to arranging a stylist. You don\u2019t see that often at workshops and it will give florists amazing materials to market their busineses,\u201d she said. \u201cThis will be quite a treat!\u201d<\/p>\n
