If there\u2019s one thing Neville MacKay, CAFA, PFCI, loves, it\u2019s storytelling. (Well, and flowers, obviously.)<\/p>\n

The longtime author of Canadian Florist<\/em>\u2019s \u201cNeville on the Level\u201d column is wrapping up his first book, a compilation of his greatest hits from the magazine, and already working on another. For his second book, the owner of My Mother\u2019s Bloomers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, wants to convey the vast emotions flowers communicate. To accomplish this, he\u2019s crowdsourcing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to include as many personal stories as I can,\u201d he said. \u201cLook, we all have them, and they\u2019re all meaningful! What\u2019s yours?\u201d<\/p>\n

While MacKay\u2019s first book is intended for those in the industry\u2014and includes the typical zingers and levity Canadian Florist readers have come to love<\/a>\u2014his second project (yet to be titled) is \u201cfor everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to show that flowers aren\u2019t just beautiful,\u201d he said. \u201cFlowers are tied to so many feelings and memories. They\u2019re very important parts of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Years ago, MacKay started asking customers, \u201cWhat\u2019s your story? Why do you love flowers?\u201d Their answers have warmed his heart and, at times, completely shocked him.<\/p>\n

For instance, one of his regulars exclusively buys red roses. She explained to MacKay that her late boyfriend refused to buy them for her because he associated them with a horrible ex. One day, after her beloved had passed, she was standing in line at a bakery when a woman tapped her on the shoulder. \u201cExcuse me,\u201d the stranger said. \u201cI\u2019m a medium and I see a man throwing red roses at you.\u201d Smiling through tears, MacKay\u2019s customer asked the woman to tell the male figure, \u201cDon\u2019t worry, I can buy my own now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another customer had given a bouquet to her sister who was suffering from Alzheimer\u2019s disease. \u201cShe didn\u2019t recognize me, but she could name every single flower in front of her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

An Anglo-Saxon woman who married a Chinese man talked about her decision to mix white carnations and yellow roses in her bridal bouquet to illustrate how nicely the races play together.<\/p>\n

One couple fessed up to stealing a bird of paradise\u2014\u201cso striking!\u201d they said\u2014from hotel property on a trip to Montego Bay. Another woman recalled the corsage she got for prom\u2014her first gift of flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gotten some brilliant stories from all around the world,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been great to see the emotion come in. From the womb to the tomb\u2014whether you\u2019re hatched, matched, or dispatched\u2014flowers are there. Can you imagine how much fun it will be to curl up on the couch and read this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people have floral design books,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey\u2019re great inspiration for those of us in the industry. But I wanted something more inclusive for consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n
