Allen Smith learned the value of fresh product for holiday decor, and how to transition designs from Thanksgiving to Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Georgia-based floral educator Sharon McGukin, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, joined the gardening and lifestyle expert at his home, Moss Mountain Farm in Roland, Arkansas, for an episode on his syndicated show \u201cGarden Style.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Sharon designing on set\" class=\"wp-image-2970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set-1140x855.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sharon-designing-on-set.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe went through Allen\u2019s garden and clipped things. He was very generous letting me use whatever I wanted,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharon.mcgukin\">McGukin<\/a>, author of \u201cFlowers of the Heart\u201d and a former president of the American Institute of Floral Designers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McGukin collected boxwood, various hollies, nandina, camellias and a ton of seasonal greens, which she paired with seeded eucalyptus, roses and lilies donated by Lauree Lincoln of Sunshine Bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"Floral Mesh &amp; fruit wreath\" class=\"wp-image-2964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath-802x1024.jpg 802w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath-1140x1456.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath-600x767.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Floral-Mesh-fruit-wreath.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to show people how they can combine purchased floral product with items they can find outside,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McGukin also demonstrated how beautifully food complements flowers, first creating a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pallensmith\/videos\/2285588451513696\/UzpfSTE4MjkzODc2MTU6MTAyMDk3NjM5MzI0OTQ5MTU\/\">15-inch evergreen wreath<\/a>&nbsp;accented with pumpkins and gourds. She then replaced the autumnal bounty with apples, pomegranates, red berries and candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As she designed, McGukin explained florists\u2019 mechanics and tools, such as using Oasis foam soaked in flower food to extend vase life and Cowee picks to secure flowers. She also advised viewers where to buy these products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Plant basket w flowers\" class=\"wp-image-2967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers-1140x855.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Plant-basket-w-flowers.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea was to make it easy for people to try this at home,\u201d McGukin said, adding that Smith\u2019s audience includes a lot of general consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She focused on repurposing the wreath, in part, because it encourages people to play with flowers on a continual basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the program offered a little something for everyone,\u201d she said. \u201cFlorists got ideas to serve their customers. Garden club members got ideas for competitions or demonstrations. They\u2019ve crossed paths numerous times giving presentations, and in 2017, Smith invited her to spend a long fall weekend in Missouri. Footage from her trip has appeared multiple times throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI absolutely loved the experience,\u201d McGukin said. \u201cHe has such a pretty farm and he\u2019s such a nice man. The morning after the demonstration, he asked if I\u2019d like to make arrangements with him to put throughout the house.
