In its 50 years, the Public Broadcasting Service has introduced\nAmericans young and old to a slew of educational topics, including the drama,\nscience, history, food, and home improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, flowers have joined the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJ Schwanke\u2019s Life in Bloom<\/a>\u201d explores various ways and reasons to incorporate flowers into daily life. Fourth-generation florist J Schwanke, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, CEO of uBloom.com, has already mapped out the first two 13-episode seasons, pulling from his company\u2019s vast video collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Season 1\u2019s overarching theme is empowerment, while season 2 covers health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series kicked off Monday, April 1, at his local station in Michigan. It will have a staggered release date on 230 PBS stations around the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great because this allows us to slowly introduce the\nuBloom website to a much broader audience,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schwanke had contemplated creating a television program geared for consumers for years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t want do a contest-based reality television series,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted to find a beautiful place for people to go for a little recess from the world. I loved the idea of PBS because it\u2019s the home of experts \u2014 it\u2019s where Julia Child, Fred Rogers and P. Allen Smith got their start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schwanke\u2019s friendship with Smith helped get the ball\nrolling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve guest starred on his show and he kindly asked how he\ncould give back to us,\u201d Schwanke said. \u201cI mentioned my dream of having a lifestyle\nshow on cut flowers, and he said it\u2019d be a great fit for PBS. He told us who\nspeak to and gave us lots of programming advice.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the planning process, Schwanke encountered numerous people eager to help make his dream a reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, his hometown PBS station in Grand Rapids suggested\nhe reach out to the Lansing station because it has a horticulture initiative and\ncould present a better opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also found a number of underwriters, including CalFlowers, Design Master ColorTool, Sunshine Bouquet, Golden Flowers, Ribbonroll.com, Chrysal and Albertsons. \u201cBecause they had faith in me, we\u2019re able to bring the joy of flowers to a national audience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His journey has been challenging, but immensely rewarding, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s no master handbook. Each PBS station is independent and autonomous,” he explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To market the show, he’s taking the approach that worked for radio host John Tesh and pop singer Barry Manilow and calling stations directly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m a people person, so I like the personal approach, rather than just sitting a mass press release,” he said. “It’s allowed me to talk about unique ways flowers fit in their community and how we could promote the launch.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal for the show? To inspire people to embrace a floral\nlifestyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want them to feel empowered to go out and buy flowers\nafter watching,\u201d Schwanke said. \u201cIf they do, this will benefit the entire\nindustry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
