{"id":635,"date":"2013-04-29T08:44:04","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T12:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.floristseo.com\/?p=635"},"modified":"2013-05-03T13:54:18","modified_gmt":"2013-05-03T17:54:18","slug":"creating-custom-reports-in-google-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/seo\/creating-custom-reports-in-google-analytics","title":{"rendered":"Creating Custom Reports in Google Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>\u00a0is hugely under-utilized though it has very useful features.\u00a0\u00a0One of these is the ability to create custom reports that display only the data that you or your customers want to see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1033013?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=1012046\">Custom reports<\/a>\u00a0let you filter your metrics based on a number of factors, as well as your own chosen settings.\u00a0\u00a0They are created by combining metrics, which are the information itself, and the various dimensions they are categorized by.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Metrics measure many site statistics, such as number of visitors, sources of traffic, landing page success, and conversion rates.\u00a0\u00a0When it comes to custom reporting, metrics come in five categories \u2013 Content, Site Usage, E-Commerce, Goals, and Advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Dimensions organize your metrics.\u00a0\u00a0If you want to see how well your flowers are selling as a result of multiple online marketing campaigns, for example, you can organize your page views and conversion rate metrics by traffic source.\u00a0\u00a0This will help you determine the relative effectiveness of your campaigns, helping you progress towards conversion optimization.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating the Custom Report<\/h2>\n<p>To create a custom report, simply click the &#8216;Custom Reporting&#8217; tab, and then click &#8216;Overview&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0Next, click the &#8216;+ New Custom Report&#8217; button and enter a name for the report. Then you will need to choose the type of data table you would like, either Explorer or Flat.\u00a0\u00a0These will be explained below.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you will have the option to set a filter if you wish.\u00a0\u00a0To do so, choose a dimension, select &#8216;Include&#8217; or &#8216;Exclude,&#8217; and choose whether you want an &#8216;Exact&#8217; or &#8216;Regex&#8217; match.\u00a0\u00a0(Regex stands for regular expressions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1034324?hl=en\">which include special characters to capture certain pieces of information<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Then enter the value you would like to filter by.<\/p>\n<p>Add any additional profiles you would like this report to be available to, and then click &#8216;Save.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2>Explorer Table and Flat Tables<\/h2>\n<p>The Explorer Table consists of a series of hierarchically-organized, hyperlinked data tables.\u00a0\u00a0This allows you to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blastam.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/04\/google-analytics-v5-custom-reports\/\">compare several different groups of metrics along the same dimensions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To create an Explorer Table, input a name for the first group of metrics and click the &#8216;+ add metric&#8217; button to add each desired metric.\u00a0\u00a0When you are finished, click &#8216;+ add metric group&#8217; and repeat the process to add another group of metrics.\u00a0\u00a0Click the &#8216;+ add dimension&#8217; button to add your dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>A Flat Table consists simply of a table with up to two dimensions and up to 25 metrics.\u00a0\u00a0Input the information in a similar manner to Explorer tables.<\/p>\n<p>Custom reports are a very powerful way to analyze your online marketing success, but they must be created in the correct way.\u00a0\u00a0You cannot match up just any dimensions with any metrics, as they are not all compatible with each other.<\/p>\n<p>For an extremely useful table of all the valid dimension\/metric combinations, see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/reporting\/core\/dimsmets#cats=system,visitor,session,trafficsources,adwords,goalconversions,platform,geonetwork,socialactivities,pagetracking,internalsearch,sitespeed,apptracking,eventtracking,ecommerce,socialinteractions,usertimings,exceptions,experiments,customvars,time\">Google Analytics Dimensions &amp; Metrics Reference<\/a>\u00a0site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google Analytics\u00a0is hugely under-utilized though it has very useful features.\u00a0\u00a0One of these is the ability to create custom reports that display only the data that you or your customers want to see.
