There are a myriad of ways to catch new clients and customers, and one\u00a0of the fastest and most cost-effective ways of doing so is search engine optimization.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-787\" alt=\"Local Map\" src=\"http:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/local-map.jpg\" width=\"526\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/local-map.jpg 526w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/local-map-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.florist20.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/local-map-400x247.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Not All SEO Is Created Equal<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re an older, seasoned florist or you&#8217;re a fresh, new kid block on the\u00a0block, you&#8217;ve likely heard of the many virtues of SEO. You&#8217;ve might heard that hoisting your\u00a0website atop of Google&#8217;s search engine is the key to getting new leads to visit your website.\u00a0It could have been word of mouth from a friend who is also a business owner &#8212; perhaps\u00a0declaring that a search engine optimizer helped his website climb on top of Google&#8217;s\u00a0Mount Olympus. Or maybe you heard an aggressive sales pitch from a whiz kid that\u00a0promises the world and more, proclaiming to unleash countless leads and to have new\u00a0clients bursting through your doors.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is achievable. And what you&#8217;ve heard from that friend, search engine optimizer, or\u00a0whoever, may very well be true. But what many people won&#8217;t tell you, or will just forget to\u00a0mention, is that what worked for them may not work very well for your business. Sometimes\u00a0the shoe doesn&#8217;t fit.<\/p>\n<p>To put it simply, let&#8217;s use an example. Let&#8217;s clarify the difference between:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A nationwide florist<\/li>\n<li>A statewide florist<\/li>\n<li>A local florist<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The difference is clear. The first one is presumably a big market, big business florist. The\u00a0second, though not nearly a large as the first, is bigger than the third. The third (local) florist\u00a0may have just a few locations in the immediate area.<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s say a search engine optimization company takes on three new clients, which\u00a0are the three florists listed above. That SEO team, if they know what they are doing, will have\u00a0several distinctly different strategies for each florists. Let&#8217;s identify these strategies as\u00a0general SEO and Local SEO.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the SEO company might do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Nationwide florist. This florist is the largest of the three and will have the biggest budget. Since it&#8217;s nationwide, it&#8217;ll be targeting most of America&#8217;s most populated cities. With its budget, it can capably pursue more general keywords that have high search volume. For example, \u201cwhere to buy flowers\u201d, \u201cflorists USA\u201d, \u201chow to buy flowers,\u201d etc, etc. This florist should also pursue local SEO. For instance, lets say the florists have a location in Manhattan, New York. For example, \u201cflorists manhattan\u201d \u201cwhere to find a florist manhattan\u201d \u201cbuy flowers in manhattan\u201d etc, etc. A nationwide florist should use combination of both strategies to fully realize its marketing potential.<\/li>\n<li>Statewide florist. While they could target general keywords relevant to the florist market,\u00a0they are better off focusing on local keywords. If, for example, they&#8217;re located throughout\u00a0the state of New York, they would do well by plugging in the cities they&#8217;re located in as\u00a0search terms. For instance, \u201cbuy flowers in buffalo new york\u201d, \u201cflorists in albany ny\u201d,\u00a0\u201cwhere to buy flowers in syracuse.\u201d You get the idea.<\/li>\n<li>Local florists. Same deal as the statewide florist. A targeted, localized SEO strategy is the way to go. Which leads us to the next section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Why Local SEO is the Most Powerful SEO Strategy for Small Local Businesses<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the difference between local and general keywords.<\/p>\n<p>General: General keywords can have higher search volume, meaning that more people\u00a0search for these keywords. Keywords like \u201cbuy flowers\u201d or \u201csend flowers\u201d could be considered general keywords. A plethora of people search for them, and if\u00a0you reach the first page of Google, you will have a steady stream of visitors to your website.\u00a0<strong>But that doesn&#8217;t mean that you will have a steady stream of clients.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Local: Local keywords are geo-targeted. Search terms like \u201cbuy flowers in buffalo new york\u201d and\u00a0\u201cflorists in albany ny\u201d are targeted geographically to reach a certain demographic of people\u00a0that live in that area. Local keywords are often buyer keywords. General keywords are\u00a0good because of their high search volume, but the visitors that you get can literally be\u00a0anywhere. They might very well be interested in a florist, but if they are across the country\u00a0and you only serve customers in your immediate area, they are of no use to you. Local\u00a0keywords are golden because they are within your immediate area. If a person types in\u00a0\u201cflorists in los angeles\u201d they are most likely looking for a florist in that area. If that person\u00a0visits your website that is potentially a very hot lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s talk about three good reasons you should take advantage of local SEO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It simplifies your SEO strategy.<\/strong> The person or company in charge of your SEO should have\u00a0a clear-headed goal to achieve. Get on the first page of Google for local search terms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many of the leads will be looking to buy.<\/strong> This should be a no-brainer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local SEO keywords are much easier to rank than generic search terms.<\/strong>\u00a0General keywords will have a high search volume, so the competition will be fierce.
