Out with the old, in with the new! If you’re looking to usher in 2015 in style, why not check out the trend guide from J Schwanke, AAF, AIFD, PFCI?

The host of JTV at uBloom.com has curated four looks — cumulus, fairy tale, fleur la table, and heirloom — that encapsulate what customers want right now.

“Flowers REACT to trends; we don’t SET them,” Schwanke said. “It's about assembling information, following up with research to see which trends have ‘legs' and are getting attention from all aspects of the industry...growers, wholesalers, mass market, consumers, weddings and event, and buyers.”

Schwanke scoured trend reports for the fashion industry, furnishers and interior designers; studied market research; paid close attention to the entertainment industry (“the biggest influencer of trends!” he said); and communicated “constantly” with retail florists and event planners.

“I take all that information into consideration and, pretty quickly, you can identify what is popular and purchased, then the themed concepts begin to take shape,” Schwanke said.

“This is actual research into what is selling in real time,” Schwanke said. “It’s not a forecast of what we hope to happen.” Each of the four looks include substantial flowers, foliage and colors that go with them and is in no way a paid endorsement, he said.

The names come last. “Fairytale was ‘Courtyard’ during conception, but that only explained part of the trend (kings and queens’ courts),” he said. “Then the influence of fables started to gain strength.”

If you want to wow your customers, “it’s all about being able to detach from what you like to what is happening,” Schwanke said. “I may not like a trend but that does not mean it isn’t valid.” He knows the industry grows tired of some trends, but reminds florist to keep in mind that consumers “are rarin’ to go with them” and will continue to pay for it. (So bite your tongue and tell brides their idea of mason jar tablescapes sounds simply divine ;).)

Defining these styles with wonderful imagery is what we all need. We may not implement all of them, but having these examples to relate to clients of all ages gives florists the tools to stay in the "trends" game with proper knowledge to share. Great subject matter J and Katie!
