...with your morning coffee? This has to be the coolest webTwoOhy site I've seen yet...I guess I need to start looking hard at the new Yahoo! UI stuff. The "wow" factor is great.

What caught my attention is that he is using WordPress, the same one I have selected for my directory...I am drooling over getting some version of this working with my data.

Don't forget to click on those little yellow numbers in the margin, and the left sidebar...

I like YUI

I've done some work with the YUI. The JS is a little heavy (they include additional files with whitespace removed), but it's very well documented and with good examples. Comparable in function to scrip.taculo.us, and then some.

RJD, no doubt that AJAX starts fattening the client significantly, and therein lies the dilemma. Do you think that people *want* that sort of functionality at the sake of fast page load times, or is it just nutritionally-empty eye-candy?

Well, at least that's *my*dilemma. I have worked up the little sliding "navigation" widget with a treeview control, but am not sure about implementing it on my live site. On some browsers it may be slow, and on others may not work at all.

Do I really want to risk alienating customers just for the sake of "wow!"??

YUI isn't all AJAX. I'm not sure it has true AJAX elements at this time. YUI is primarily a library of client-side JavaScript.

AJAX, on the other hand, is small client-side JavaScript functions which call server side scripts or web services, and then update the page with the results of those calls. When done correctly, AJAX can actually speed up the user interface since entire pages don't need to be posted back for a simple result set.

I avoid doing wow just because I can. A a lot of AJAX I've seen is the 2006 version of the spinning "new" pill animated GIF from 1996.

Well, at least its *slightly* better than flashing ANSI from 1988! <g>

And you are correct...it's wrapping of XMLHttpRequest is only a small part of the overall package, but looking at some the class methods they seem to have done a good job making a lot of the important functionality pretty darn easy to get your head around.

AJAX could be worse...

Could be BLINK or MARQUEE.
