I know that we should have had a website long ago. My only excuse is that I was born in 1933 and don't multi-task too well. Please no geezerette bashing! I'm lucky I can get out of bed in the morning. I've been e-mailing
Brent at Digital Thoughts and he has been helpful. What
advice would you give a beginner? If at all possible please
use one syllable words. Ok maybe up to 2 syllable words.
Remember to be kind, I could know your Grandmother.

If you are as computer deficient as I am there are several companies out there who make floral websites with shopping carts that are very nice for the money. We are using Media 99 for our new site. I will be able to "manage" it myself eventually and can add my own photos as I gather them. There are several more and I'm sure others will chime in- just can't remmber much right now.

Genevieve,

The first thing is to register a web address that reflects your shop, location an/or both. Hopefully, a domain squatter isn't currently holding it ransom. Our host here at FlowerChat offers that service at a very, very low pice here: http://www.rkfdomains.biz/ (I have several domains registered there and the service is excellent.)

Next you'll need a host and site - some companies do both. A site can be as simple as a single page along the lines of a Yellow Page ad and can grow from there. The less you know about a website, the more you need a developer that speaks 'flowers' and can handle all the routine tasks for you - like the guys at Digital Thoughts.

Do you want to have online shopping or just a site for folks to browse in?

For most shops, a template-based site is the way to go and is definitely the most economical route in the long run. In addition to the wire services, you can get templates (with various levels of customization depending on the package) from a number of companies. (If I can find the thread where they're discussed later, I'll post it.) The more well-known companies have wire service images pre-loaded and you can just change prices as needed.

If you intend on using your own photos, you can still use a template or build your own site through companies like Yahoo!, Amazon and others - but they take a lot of time to keep up-to-date (with some having fairly high fees).

You'll need a way to retrieve your orders from the site so pick a company that makes it easy.

Heck - You're out on the web and found your way to FlowerChat so you can't be a geezerette. ;)

I suggest you go back through previous threads in the Web Development forum since there's been much discussion about naming sites and choosing webmasters and hosts. :)

Hope this helps.

Thank you Lorrie and CHR for your suggestions. I've started reading the Flower Chat threads. There is a lot of info to absorb and notes to write. I don't know which is going to get me first, the arthritis or the dry eyes.
Thanks again,
genevieve

If at all possible use .com...people "default" to that extension and using something else is SURE to confuse newcomers and, perhaps, even to lose customers to typosquatters.

That is very good advice. You might also want to purchase the .bus, .org., .net versions or your domain name as well. it isn't that expensive and it prevents one of the OG from buying them and grabbing your customers that happen to type something other than .com when searching for you.

URL extensions

is there any difference in naming your domain with
.com
.org
.co.uk ??

thanks! angela

You can name your domain anything you like..but.. .org is supposed to be for not-for-profit. For example - art museums.
.co.uk is for commercial business based in the UK.
.com is the most common way for USA businesses.
Hope that helps!
