Giving SAF Credit Where Credit Is Due

Last week, this newsletter included an insightful commentary by FlowerChatter Alice Waterous. Alice had written to us regarding her concerns about florists making negative statements on social media sites such as Facebook. (If you missed what Alice advised, check it out here.) In describing Alice's credentials, I attributed her PFCI (Professional Floral Communication - International) designation as having been bestowed upon her by the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD).

The Institute offers some prestigious distinctions, including that of being an accredited member of AIFD, as well as that of certified floral designer (CFD). However, the prestige of being a PFCI member comes from a wholly different industry organization: the Society of American Florists (SAF). (Many thanks to the keen eyes of numerous FlowerChat readers who immediately brought this error to our attention!)

Not familiar with the PFCI designation? It's one that definitely deserves more recognition. After all, the individuals with those initials after their names have been singled out by SAF as the industry's finest floral educators. Each PFCI member has proven, through his or her education and experience, to have the ability to speak authoritatively about topics pertinent to the floral industry, such as the principles and elements of floral design, the proper care and handling of flowers and effective business management techniques.

If your local floral association needs a speaker, PFCI members are the natural choice to provide your members with the best and most up-to-date information related to our industry. You can go online and search SAF's directory to find a PFCI member near you.

If you're interested in becoming a PFCI yourself, learn about the application process here. And then send us a note! Because if you want to be a truly dedicated floral communicator, then we want to help you by communicating your expertise with our readers in the FlowerChat newsletter! (Email your suggestion for an article or commentary to [email protected].)
