Google is in the process of doing an update of its algorithm. Each major update is given a name by the guys at Webmaster World and this one is called Jagger. The update has been rolled out in three phases with jagger3 still brewing.

When searching for '<city name> florist' and 'florist <city name>' the last few days, I see weight primarily given to
1) older sites with good external on-topic links
2) directories
3) sites using heavy interior linking

Have you searched Google using your shop's keywords today? Are WS affiliates with doorway pages placing higher than your relevant site? Want to let Google know? Here's how.

Click on http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html . Fill in the boxes by copying and pasting the information from the page and site you want to report.

Here's an example for a number of the results on the first page of 'los angeles florist':
Exact query - los angeles florist
Resulting Google page - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=los+angeles+florist
The specific web page or site that is misbehaving: pick one by right clicking and selecting 'copy shortcut'. Paste the link in the box.
Type(s) of problem (check all that apply):
Only select the boxes that apply. If you aren't sure, PM me and I'll try to help. Hint: a number of the results on the LA page use repeated words and are city-specific doorway pages.

Additional Details: Type 'jagger3' (without the quotes) on the first line. Then - in very simple terms - describe the issue. Here's an example:
Affiliate doorway page from a company based in ______ . Repeated use of the terms ______ and ______ but not relevant to consumers looking for a florist in _________.

See other city-specific doorway pages for towns across the US and Canada:
http://chicago-florists.phonyflorist.com/
http://new-york-florists.phonyflorist.com/
http://houston-florists.phonyflorist.com/ and thousands more.

Thank you
Go to other city searches and copy the affiliate's links and paste specific examples like I did above.

Do not launch into rants, use incendiary language or promote your own site. Do not report companies unless you can document their misbehavior. Do not expect to see results right away (although one of the particularly bad sites I reported this weekend has disappeared completely from the target SERP for now.) :>:

Report one spammy site at a time unless you see multiple pages or related sites on the same or adjacent pages.

Just a reminder that it's not enough to just file spam reports. Resolve to work at getting relevant inbound links to your own site so Google knows you're a florist that sells flowers and delivers in your city.

Cathy, my site actually placed first BUT in sponsored links in the blue box at the top is blossomflorist.com which is stating "family owned and operated since 1970". Is there retribution for that where it's highlighted?

Rhonda,

Google does not take a position on the 'truthfulness' of the Adwords ads. If they did, no out-of-town affiliate could use 'Placename Florist' (singular) anywhere in the text. Here are their editorial guidelines - https://adwords.google.com/select/guidelines.html

They do require that ads be 'on topic'. Does that site sell flowers? Yes. Is the phrase "family owned and operated since 1970" on the site? Yes. Is that ad truthful? Taken it total, No. Because blossomflorists.com hasn't been in existence since 1970 and is not a Millinocket Florist. Blossomflorists won't put their real company name and location on the site because then shoppers would know they aren't located in your town.

Google sees this issue as a dispute between competitors and appears to leave challenges like this to the companies effected.

You can file a complaint with Adwords here but don't expect much. Google is making serious money off each and every affiliate that's using this type of ad.

Who should care? The wire services whose commissions and performance bonuses encourage affiliates to dupe consumers at most any cost. My suggestion is to write the WS's whose images appear on the site(s) and highlight the text and its forthrightness. Send a copy to your state floral association, state Attorney Generals' Office and the US Federal Trade Commission.

Might as well send a copy of the letter to Kay's through a PM to gbk who's still lurking here every day.

There's no reason why blossomflorist.com can't advertise targeting your city using 'Millinocket Florists' (plural) but the claim of that particular 'company' being in business since 1970 is pure fabrication.

BTW, I'm seeing Abbott's as the Kay's mirror appearing in your city SERP right now.

Would be great if a national trade organization would advocate these issues on behalf of all of us instead of we individual shops having to fight the battles... Would be even better if WSs made their affiliates follow their own rules for truthful advertising.

(Wonder if we'll both get another anonymous letter after writing about this topic. ;) )

"... The following list is how we believe Google has handled these issues in the Jagger update:

1) Increased importance placed on IBL (Inbound Links) Relevancy?
2) Increased importance placed on OBL (Outbound Links) Relevancy?
3) Promotion of relevant Niche Directories (related to #1 & #2)?
4) More weight thrown back to PR @ top domain?
5) Increased importance on Adsence placement relevancy?
6) Possible introduction of CSS Spam filtering?
7) Overall Blog demotions?
8) New and unresolved "canonical" issues? ..."

And congratulations to your directory as it got a nice boost from jagger, placing well overall for <florist placename> searches. :)

Now if G could just figure out how to better filter out the affiliates that just look like directories.
