I can;t take credit for this one, but thought it worth passing on...

What does your 404 Error page look like?

Catherine Seda www.catherineseda.com recommends building your 404 error page into a look-a-like to your home page with the caveat that "the page you are looking for can not be found" at the top, but by looking like your site, with the same look and feel consumers will know they have the right company.

Have fun with your error page...a big OOOP's for instance... include links to your Search Feature, your Blog, your Email sign up page, so consumers can continue on your site instead of abandoning it.

Stay away from the hard sell, do not use words like *buy now* or *order today* but simply perhaps show 3-4 of your items, or a cartoon, or links, can both entertain as well as inform consumers.

Have fun with it...."Oh that dang disappearing page again ;)"

Excellent advice!

If you're running your own server there is another problem with the displaying the default 404 page - it suggests to hackers that your server may not have been completely set-up and/or configured. This in turn indicates it may be a "softer", more vulnerable target and can attract unwanted attention from people looking for a way in.
