It's been a little more than 3 weeks since we switched from our wire service hosted site to an independent company. I want to share a few notes about the experience.

The switch

We originally registered our own name so changing the DNS (Domain Name Server) was a breeze. I just logged into my account at the registrar and within a few hours, the entire web knew our site was located at a different IP. Very smooth, very easy. If someone else registered your name, you'll need their help - which isn't always easy to get.

Positioning

Due to the age of our site and the quantity of inbound links, we had a decent showing of our home page in most search engines for our targeted terms (city name, florist, flowers, etc...) We preserved as much of the text from our previous home page and have seen a slight improvement in SERPs - perhaps because the content is fresher or maybe because we are no longer sitting on the same server as a whole lot of other flower shops.

Redirects

I was concerned about losing the few links that showed decently (but not tops) for a few secondary terms. We looked at having 301 Redirects put in place but decided to just let the pages default to Home and have search engine spiders find the new ones. The SEs have already found the new pages in most cases.

Traffic Analysis

The WS stats package always made me feel like I was only getting a very small part of the story of our site visitors. I was right. The new analysis tools we use has been an eye opener.

Rather than just seeing the number of visitors and page views, we now have very detailed reports. The program does not count visits by search engine spiders in with real humans as I now believe the TF program did.

Shopping Cart

The one drawback has been that existing customers need to create a new account on the site. We don't believe we've lost any sales from it but anything that inconveniences shoppers needs to be recognized. A note about the new accounts was placed on the login page.

Email Reminders

We asked TF for a complete list of email addresses they had on file for us. I did get an Excel spread sheet within a few days but all it contained was the addresses - no customer names, no occasions to which they asked to be reminded, nothing else. I called and asked for 'the rest' and was told they didn't have it or couldn't retrieve it. ::BS We most likely have the data in MAS but not the specific info provided by each customer.

Content

We now have far more flexibility and can add content on the fly. Some pages require we write them in HTML and I use FrontPage to create the tables, etc. It's easy enough.

The site does require some more work than our WS hosted one, but we no longer get surprised with products popping in that we don't have and I don't have to call anyone to change our home page.

More features will be added after Christmas. At this point we just want to get through the holiday smoothly. So far, so good. :)

I really like your site.

I have a bunch of questions swirling around my brain right now, but I will ask the questions later.

Thanks for posting this Cathy

You know what I think

I am soooooo Jealous.

You can already tell the difference and you know how much fun it can be. Well at least in the beginning.

Hmm your using front page.
Don't make me go and break out Dreamweaver.

I still think you need to cut down on your sections but hey I still love it cathy.

VERY nice Cathy!

Like it a lot for it offers a very clear presentation. I too have questions, but will ask on another day....

As an FYI to those who have FTD hosted sites, FOL has a new web portal that is VERY user friendly - and offers TONS of options for your site. Perhaps the one I like most is that you can now add products on the fly - in real time: remove, change etc. anything you want. You can also change the florist message, and any other florist-related content. You don't need to know much of anything - except how to upload your custom images (a snap...). You still need to contact FOL to change the template styles....

Perhaps someday I will move to an independent site, but for now will concentrate on creating our new landing page....hopefully will be done by V-day.

- H.

PS - forgot to mention that you can link your FOL site to Constant Contact e-mails you send....

Your site is awesome - for the technically challenged novice (can you see me shrinking under my desk?) it's overwhelming to think of making our own site from scratch, but you offer such inspiration ...... we'll get there someday!

I love especially the design your own section - great idea.

Thank you for posting the info about the big changeover - more confirmation of what was suspected.

Tracy -

I purchased the site 'guts' from an independent company. What we added was the content - products, descriptions, prices, info pages, etc. A professional did the home page layout, buttons and navigation. We designed the banners and shot most of the products here. We still use a few from TF.

Yes, it takes time. Emailing customers their Design-Your-Own arrangements have given us some great feedback.

It's something no OG can do.

Cathy, You have a BEAUTIFUL website! Congratulations on such a fine job.

A question: How do you handle on-line customer orders that request one of your original designs, such as the "Holiday Orchid Centerpiece" and want it delivered out-of-state?

In our case, we try and see if our design can be filled as closely as possible. If not, we contact the sender back and explain the situation. We do include in each description if it's for local delivery.

Cathy,

Your site is absolutely, positively...GORGEOUS!!! I spent a lot of time viewing your site the other day-so interesting! I especially love the design your own arrangement idea and that you e-mail a photo of the arrangement sent! Talk about customer service...you rock! Would you mind sharing more info as to which independent company you used? Next year I am hoping to make major changes to our web presence and you sure have given me some ideas and inspiration! Kudos to you!

Very, very nice, Cathy! Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, and thanks for the suggestions that you've given me from time to time for my site. It is surely a struggle when I can barely speak or understand much of the language, but you have always been kind and generous with your help.

Thanks for all the kind words about our site. :)

Earlier in the thread I commented about only receiving a list of email addresses from TF and much to my surprise yesterday, I got an Excel spread sheet of the occasion reminders our customers had requested on the old site. :faint: Very nice.

Frank - sorry I didn't answer your question sooner. We tell customers, both on the site and on the phone, that we will request a design in a similar style and color. We give the web page to the filling florist, if they're interested, and cite color, style and size. The instructions include "Please make an arrangement that would prompt the recipient to want to buy all their flowers from you."

Thanks Cathy! I too love that tagline.

Cathy, the look is too 1800flowers for me. Your designs are awesome, they say to me unique, the layout of your webapge says comoddity.

With that said, the rest of your site rocks. I really like the work you have put into it and there is too much to talk about how well you've done.

I'm even more happy that you left TF. That is what makes me the most happiest to hear.

Ok I'll go crawl under my rock and be back here in a couple of months.
