Today I received a call from a customer who tried to place an order on our web site. He couldn't remember his password, was driving to work so he called. In conversation he wondered if we could retrieve that info for him. I wasn't sure, but I told him I would check it out.

What I found in the list of registered customers was a bunch of CRAP listings. The big 3 cities were NY, Atlanta and Cotonou (which I just googled it's in Benin) all of them were junk/spam type message and some were porn.

So what would be their benefit to register on our site? Is there some way to block this. Not one of them registered with a legit names and some were even in Cyrillic alphabet. and yes I deleted them all.

The whole thing is just strange.

I have a Strider site, Ryan any thoughts on this? TIA

Automated spam bots will register on any site they can find hoping for a public profile page to get links. Feel free to ignore or delete the registrations.

I'm not familiar with Strider sites, but their are a few ways to cut down on spam registrations like this if they get too out of hand:

a) you can add a Captcha to your registration page, although this can make it harder for real people to register.
b) if you don't sell internationally, you may be able to block internet traffic from different parts of the world, where most of the spam is likely coming from, or at least track the IP addresses of the spam submissions, and block them.

There's no perfect solution because you want to stay open for real customers, but if it's eating up too much of your time, it's best to look into what plugins and modules are available for your specific e-commerce software.
