Wedding bouquet-- all stephanotis

I'm making an all-stephanotis bouquet for a wedding this weekend, and am now starting to worry that I won't have enough stems. My wholesaler suggested 75 stems, so that's what I have ordered. Anyone else every make a bouquet like this, and if so, how many stems did you use?

The new JH wedding book has one in it that uses 120 stems with pearls. It is not that big.Maybe one of the John Henry people could send you a picture of that. Not sure if I can post it where it is not my design. They have it priced at $426.00. Not sure if this helps, the bouquet they made has no greens. Maybe you could use a bit of maidenhair fern to fill in a bit.

I've made a bouquet of all stephanotis and I used about 250 of them. Plus, you have to factor in that some of them will not be "bouquet worthy".

I think Jessica Simpson's bouquet must of had a thousand!

We did one last year with all stephanotis. The bride brought in a picture and I could tell that it was all silk. There were about 400 perfect silk steph in it, but she wanted fresh.

The budget didn't allow for 400, so we used 200 and started with white hydrangea as an armature. It worked really well, but allow plenty of time to wire and put your pearls in--it's very labor intensive! We charged $700 for the bouquet and it turned out great. Good luck!

I was planning on using a foam bouquet holder and tape each stem with chenille pipe cleaners and pearl pins. Does that sound do-able? Can you tell I'm nervous about this one?!??! Thanks in advance!
 
We use Stemson Stephanotis stems from our wholesaler. That way each steph has a tiny water supply. (I think directions are included). You can cut your pearl corsage pins short and insert them right into the white steph stem. No need to put them in foam. I just checked the box and it says no wiring or taping required, but I still tape the stems with light green tape. The chenille stems might not have enough support and may bend easily and could become misshapen. (sp?)

Ditto to all that - much easier than the foam, and certainly the home made chenille stems. If you're using greenery with the steph, use green tape - no greens, use white tape and it keeps everything very light. To add some length, to the stemsons, we tape 3 to a longer taped wire - if you're doing an all steph bouquet, you could easily add 5 or more to a longer taped wire.

I like the stem treatment on the JH picture, the sweeping fringe. Very different without being crazy different.

The biggest wedding we ever did had all steph bridesmaids bouquets. The brides was steph plus quite a few other things, but the girls were very beautiful. We used 100 steph for each.
 
Is there a way to order the large size stephanotis blooms? The ones I normally get are the smaller ones.

Also, I have been experimenting with conditioning. I have tried soaking in flower food then spraying both sides with chrystal clear. This was better than spraying one side, but they still did not hold up as long as I would have liked in the stemsons. I was also using the small flowers.

What is the best way to make these delecate flowers last?
 
If you LIGHTLYcover/lightly wrap the oasis with plumosa, it helps beef up the base, as well as cover your mechinics. Sometimes the no greenery look is tough to pull off and this is a great way to solve the challenge; use the plumosa primarily as a mechanic rather than a decorative foliage.

And I always put a short slit in the cotton ends of the stemsons to help with water absorbtion/hydration.

Our wholesaler only has one size. They are approx. 1 inch in diameter and 25 come packed on shred in a small container.

Years ago we had problems with black spots and weak calayx, but lately they've been consistantly beautiful. We get them in on Wednesday and just put them on a shelf in our cooler 'til we're ready to wire them Thursday using the stemsons. By the way, I push the stemsons up until the center pops out--then I put in the pearl corsage pin.

I usually stick them upright into styrofoam and spray them on all sides with Crowning Glory before setting them back in the cooler. We haven't had any problems with them lasting.

...and if all else fails, lightly hit it(the damaged blooms) with flat white design master....it has saved me in a pinch on a few occasions over the years!

Same here - I love those little jeannie bottle things that pop out!

Just a note about totally immersing the steph in water - this made it go totally translucent for me one time, so I stopped doing that. I hydrate the stemson, attach, tape, mist, dry and store.

We had Canadian steph for the last wedding, and it was substantially larger than our usual. I had never thought it could come in different sizes, but that may be an option for you also. It was perfect, large, and there were 8 extra blooms in the box.

Thanks for the tips.

I had the black spot problem last year also, but so far, not this year. Is there any way to avoid black spot?

I will request the Canadian steph with large blooms next time. Thanks!
 
I love the posy pockets. I can't wait until a bride wants one....
