renaming images

Hoping someone can help me out with this. I'm not very technical but through trial and error and Websites for Dummies, I made our website a few years ago. I try to optimize it the best I can and I had heard that it's best to have as much text as you can on the pages as opposed to code, for the web crawlers. I was thinking that maybe I should rename my images with descriptions. If this is indeed a good idea, should I rename them at the source, on my hard drive in My Pictures or can/should I rename them in the folder section of Front Page, or where?

You need to rename them wherever they are accessed from the web, in this case Front Page then re-publish them to the web. Folder section of FP is good as it will warn you if you have existing links to them and usually fix them for you as well.

Be sure to also add descriptions to the "Alt" tag for each image - this is the thing that pops up if your image cannot appear for some reason. I use Dreamweaver and code in straight HTML, I am not familar with FrontPage. But look around, usually in WYSIWG programs if you click on an image you are inserting into a page, there will be options that pop up, and "Alt" is often one of those.

And in Photo Shop Elements, when editing you have the option to encode the text into the image right in PSE and it stays with the image when uploaded.

In fact JB, dreamweaver looks at the image recognizes it as red roses and does ti for you automatically and then rubs your feet and does the dishes and brings me a scotch on the rocks. OH WAIT! That's what you do for me! Get down here and make me a sammy woman! /points to JB

Well Expression Web asks you as you insert an image what you want the alt text to be.

But I digress - she asked about Front Page. Yer likely too wet behind the ears to remember that program.
