Domain name questions

It is a pain in the neck, but it is possible. I did this for my jewelry business a few months back. I would talk with the webhosting service you are transferring to, and have them walk you through what you need to do. I switched from yahoo to godaddy, and the people at godaddy were very helpful and told me everything I needed to do. It takes a few days too, there are all kinds of waiting periods. And you have to do something to release the domain name. It is rather unpleasant, but absolutely worth it to be free from Yahoo.

If you are looking for a new service, godaddy.com has been very good to me, and they are SO much cheaper! Some people don't like them, but I have had nothing but good experiences with them.

It's not hard at all - you just log into your account where you have it registered (yahoo?) and change the nameserver information to the settings of your new hosting company.

It was not that easy for me moving out of Yahoo. They even charged me $34 that I later found out I didn't have to spend, but I could not get back because I had already agreed to it. Yahoo was AWFUL to me.

I'm pretty sure that means it can only be transferred by yourself or whoever is the administrator on the account.

Transfer Lock

Here is a little disturbing notation on my domain name on Whois.com:

Status: clientTransferProhibited

Does that mean I can't transfer?

It means there is a transfer lock on your domain. You should be able to 'unlock' the domain in order to transfer it to a different registrar. There generally is a 30/60/90 day waiting period for some registrars. Getting domains transferred from Yahoo is especially ugly.

Bloomz is right, but this is what I am talking about "releasing" it. And this is why Yahoo is a pain. You have the right to it. You just have to figure out how to get it released. Which is why I say call wherever you are transferring it TO. They know all the ins and outs.

It is actually a protection for you, so that no one else can try to take your name.

Transfer Prohibited:
The domain name is restricted from being transferred to another registrar.

Please note that within the first 60 days of registration or within the first 60 days following a transfer, a domain name will be placed in "Transfer Prohibited" status.

"Client Transfer Prohibited" Most likely, that is just your domain registrar's way of indicating that the domain is locked. What registrar is holding the domain for you?

Are you moving just the website hosting from Yahoo to a new web host? If just the website is being moved, then you can redirect the your url to the nameserver information in minutes (they will tell you up to 72 hours) Simply upload your website to the new web host, then redirect the url to the new server.

Another question, is your website a Yahoo Storefront? If so, I don't think you can move it to a new host. You would need to build a new website.

If you are moving your website to someone like Ryan, they can do this for you.
