  • We continue the OG discussion but we have reached a new dimension for OG's when now there is a growing number of Real Florists, of long standing joining crowd. We're using the reject button so much more here in Durham. Do we understand that we're a party to the restructuring of what were a group of healthy local businesses carving out and serving truly local markets? Never to become millionaires but living comfortably when we do what we do - well.
Hey Jon... It's really not complicated, just advanced. If you like, I'd love to "walk" you around the place... Wed or Thu afternoon would work for me.

I'm doing thus from my phone so it's really not that hard. Glad you're back, look forward to talking to you.

Hi Jon... I do hope you are finding your way around the site and enjoying what you find.

    Hi Jon:

First, what a lovely picture of you and your wife (I don't think that's a huge leap of faith).

FC is daunting to navigate at first. I've been a member since it's inception and I learn new things all the time.

As I've been a member for so long I look at it in a different light. It is a community of diversity, human kind and topic kind. Some weeks there are "hot" button issues, other weeks, not so much. It all depends on your interests.

Look for your interests when searching the site. Or, just jump in with a post about something you feel strongly about.

Either way, I'm sure you and your wife have had countless experiences in the industry that will be sure to educate and or entertain. This is a place where you can share at will.

I think your introductory message below is somewhat wasted on this page... you need to place it in a new thread, perhaps the Chat forum for a start More people will see it there.

My wife, Beatrix, and I (Jon) own Floral Dimensions at Academy Court at 3401 University Drive in Durham, NC, 27707. (800-253-8682)

We are a real LOCAL RETAIL FLORIST serving Durham City and County, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Research Triangle and a few other named places here in central NC if the customer likes our work and is willing to pay for the real cost delivery.

Bea (Beatrix) was born in the Netherlands (1941) and her early years were spent there and in Suriname (Dutch Giana sp?) and in Brazil with her parents and two siblings before moving to Covington, VA here in the United States. We met when she was employed at a Radio and TV operation in Philadelphia, PA, she in radio and me in TV.

Bea schooled in The Netherlands, Suriname, Brazil, in VA and Philadelphia. She later studied Floral Design at the Camden County Vocational School in NJ after we were married (1966) and had our first (1970) child. I grew up in South NJ, born in 1936, schooled in NJ, at Arizona State University and the University of Penn. We moved (1982) to Durham, NC a few years after our second child was born (1978) and I continued working in broacast TV. Bea found a part time job, after the children were settled, as a designer with a local florist here in Durham. After a year or so , she was lored to another shop now ours. We bought this three year old business in August/September 1986 when the owners had a child and found that they would rather focus on their family instead of the business. The owners, husband and wife, were both accountants.

I retired from commerical broadcast TV in 1996 and joined Bea in daily operations in 1998. We've grown the business 10 fold in the last 21 years.

We DO NOT try to compete with the big box stores, wire services, order gatherers or other florists. We suggest to our clients/customers that we DO NOT JUST SELL FLOWERS AND PLANTS, WE SELL WHAT WE DO WITH THEM. We serve the middle and uppper end of the Floral Market here and allow pricing and quality to select our customers.

I'm finishing a second year as President of the Northen Piedmont Florist Association and during this time we were able to write and pass Deceptive Advertising legislation that became effective here in North Carolina, October 1, 2007.

I look forward to some progressive, procative, forward looking discussions that can benefit real local retail florists in this incredible time of change.
