any other tricks to make lilies open

John Henry Company makes a product called FM BUDMAGIC. It is a type of special preservative that is specfically formulated to quickly open tight buds and blooms.

Other than the techniques already talked about.......That is the only other method I know of.

WHERE was this advice at MD? We had buckets of lilies in the parking lot under full sun for 2 days.

But I DID get quite adept at hand cracking them without ripping the petals to shreds.

We had 10 buckets of lilies for today's projects and tried all the usual tricks--to no avail. They were all out in front of the shop in the sun etc.

We were feeling silly and on Thursday, Laurie put up a sign that said "Our wedding lilies won't open! HONK for the lilies!" Every time somebody honked, we'd cheer and wave.

Couple days of honking and they are open! Maybe we are onto something . . .

you can crosscut the bottom of the stems and put them in warm water.

you can tent them with a platic bag and set them in the sun for a greenhouse effect. also put a piece of fruit like an orange or banana under the bag as well.

Yep, a couple of ripe bananas will work wonders opening tight lilies

I love your story. It had to create interest in your flower shop with that scene. Good marketing tool

Yup Cheryl is right about the anthers. I will save my blown ones in a bag if I know I have wedding work the next week with lillies because they are always tighter than bullets or they open too fast. When I get my lillies in on Monday I keep them cooled until Thursday morning, then pull them out of the cooler and pop the fuzzy worms in fresh water, Viola! most of the blooms are perfectly open and ready use for the wedding.

I was told (from a design show) that the pollen had to be from the same bunch of lilies that were trying to bloom. They couldn't be from another variety or another bunch. So I guess that wasn't true?...
 
I had heard this too about the stamen in the water but have tried it twice & it made no difference for me. Fortunately not in desperate need, just tried for future reference. those in the "pollinated" water did no better than those I followed my regular procedures. For whatever it's worth.
 
does it make a difference if the stamen have "powdered", when I tried it they might have been still smooth?????
