I keep seeing the use of wheat grass or what I think is wheat grass in many of the shelter magazines for unique styles.....does anyone have a source or know how it used..is it a sheet like sheet moss only taller? Any ideas or info greatly appreciated...thanks

I learn a lot of things by trial and error (with lots of errors). One time I needed to simulate a golf course feel for a country club golf luncheon. I experimented with just putting grass seeds on precut or formed oasis in my container and kept it wet. Within just a few days, I had a stand of grass growing in the right shapes to use. I added the props and a touch of flowers at that point and they were a big hit.

This could also work when you have to design a football field with goalposts.
I let some of it grow to experiement with even more and realized that I could also mow or cut it to fit my needs.

The grass seed is so easy to germinate this way.

What kind of grass seeds.......the wheat grass (?) I have heard about comes in a 'tray'.Sounds health foodie store to me but we are seeing so much of it down here that there has to be a source..... I will try home depot this week and see if they have a clue.....I like your idea for the grass and the oasis...we did C/P's recently for a Jersey shore party and we used wet sand in lomeys with some cool shells, netting, weird dried stuff.....one of our designers from up north wanted to make it realistic as to the "things" you actually find on the beach...cig butts and so forth.Since we want to keep this client we kept on track but we sure had some laughs over the "things" you find on the beach down here...........
Looking forward to Dallas and finally getting to see you guys again....last time you were on a stage getting a very prestigious Award!!!

Nothing magical here.... It is just wheat seed. Depending where you live, all you have to do is go to a farmer or a grain elevator and buy some.

A 50lb bag will last you forever, as long as the weevils don't get to it first.

If you have a problem getting it, send me a pm, I can probably send you some. That is assuming that my seed is still viable. Around here, heat seed is more readily available in the July thru Fall.

We have an oriental market here in Pittsburgh that grows it and sells it wholesale. It's organic and edible. They brought us a tray to sample, and our designers loved it.
 
There is a flower wholesaler out of CA that sells and ships it. But expensive. MAYESH wholesale... i think it is www.mayesh.com... they also have a cool webzine with design ideas.
 
Carol, you grow it on Oasis? Sweeeet. I'll have to try that!!

We've been doing this for about 3 years now. At Easter, we hide little Easter eggs in the grass, which is a big seller. There is also a contemporary restaurant that we sold 25 small glass square vases fill with wheat grass as centerpieces.

At father's day it would be cool to have the grass over grown and a mini lawn mower in it with a sign that says something like, Dad's Day Off.

I wonder if you could get a 6 inch glass square vase, grow the grass, and have a pet worm in there for kids. I know you think it is crazy, a pet worm  But look at all the people buying pet Hermit Crabs. lol My wife does not liek that idea. But, hey for kids, it would be fine... not as centerpieces. lol

Joe thank you so much for your offer.the whole staff is rolling on the floor since half of them have no idea what a grain elevator is.....the only elevators we have are in the dept stores! And as far as a 50 pound bag of anything.well it made for a tickle but we do appreciate your offers....now if it comes in smaller quantitys then maybe we will ask for some! Thanks again....grain elevators...seems like a good place to place an ad!
 
Health Food Grocery Store

We buy it by the flat at our Natural Health Food Grocery Store in town. Usually runs about $7.00. We've used it to simulate Golf Coarse turf for a funeral, and we use a lot of it at Easter.

I think I have found a new market. For the low low price of $19.95 plus shipping and handling, I will send you a two pound bag of wheat. You can have your choice of soft red spring wheat, hard red spring wheat, durum or two other varieties that I can not think of at the moment

Go to any Health Food Store or the bulk food sextion of most supermarkets and you can can hard red wheat for less than a buck a pound. But it also sounds like some folks ar eplanting regular grass seed in oasis, too. Danny

recouped our investment in the first container sold. Cha ching $$

I buy mine at the Grange Co-Op. I think Grange Co-Ops are common everywhere.... I think. Buying the grass direct is spendy for me.
 
I would love to see some pictures of the designs created with grass... if anyone is able.

Wheat Grass in Wedding Reception

Here are a few shots of wheat grass used in one of last weekend's weddings. We purchased it from a local wholesaler - plus a few extra flats from a whole-foods type market.

The "box" for the cake was created from foam core lined with heavy duty plastic and wrapped with ribbon. We elevated the cake with a Lomey cake stand that had six legs attached for extra stability.

The head table containers are clear plastic single rose boxes that were painted ivory inside. The flowers (tulips, viburnum and seafoam) were simply inserted into the wheatgrass roots. To carry through the 'grass' theme, the centerpieces used beargrass wrapped inside the bubble bowls.

Was a fun theme. :)

Funny story

So the cake was SUPPOSED to look much like Cathy's BUT, I had left the site for about 30 minutes and the bride's "helpers" had taken my perfect box of wheatgrass to use and had cut it into oh... about 30 pieces which I then had to jigsaw back together. not happy, but i swear people look at the picture and love it and I usually cringe!

I love the "naturalized" look Parie. In my opinion you can stop cringing... it's not necessary!
