Who is a designer?

Mu business card says office manager. But I can wire a corsage or whip up a bud vase if needed. I really am better at the other stuff though, bookeeping, marketing and the such!

I can't think of anything in this shop that I don't do... My shop is small and so is the town, so I answer questions and take orders everywhere I go, ie. at the football game or grocery store people order arrangements or give me checks to pay their bills... when I do have help there are some folks who won't talk to anyone else if I am here... Iggy

Oh, this is my town too. I just hate it when I get hit up at Church - not what I'm there for.
but I will add:

in addition to most everything mentioned I also grow and harvest summer cut flowers. Mow, trim, weed and shovel snow around the store (when I HAVE TO).

I have also changed the oil and changed the flat tires on the delivery vans, knocked out walls in the store and rewired light fixtures.

I am, at the moment a one women show, with the exception of a couple afternnons each week and holidays, I design it, I deliver it. And I'm sure you all know the never ending list of "other jobs". If the toilet doesn't get cleaned I know who to blame. The best thing about working for yourself is you get to pick the 80 hours a week you work!

I am a designer of sorts. . . . .

Actually a mechanical designer, I design machines and conveyors and industrial equipment (on my real regular paycheck job).

I have taken the Basic Design Class at Auburn University which is put on by the Alabama State Florists' Association.

I can help with coursages, and maybe green a spray.

BUT, I can tell a nice arrangement from an ugly one.

I'm like the majority ....

I'm the main designer, main delivery girl, front shop, wash buckets and toilets and the whole kit and kaboodle, except the bookwork. Great with flowers and colours but miserable with numbers.(which is why I don't join in on the forum discussions when it comes to money and numbers)

The last sentence says it all!!

I am in the same position as you are... I do everything! Can't say that it is done especially the most efficiently but it does get done. Hope to change this soon.

I Add....

the "animal" characteristics to our shop...I fetch and go'fer.
You know, in MY "illustrious" career in this industry, I STILL GET shivers when dealing with a crying widow....almost like a fear of public speaking!!
Mikey does what Mikey's have ALWAYS done......everything that it takes to make MY world go round, and round, and round, and round <now on my arse>, I build, I fix, I repair, I buy and fetch 98% of our flowers, I deliver (with help from Cialis, once in a while), I do refrigeration, I do basic repairs to vehicles, I maintain & build our networks, I do the invoicing, and followup late payments, I lay tiles, and ceramics, I repair & maintain HVAC systems, I do brickwork, cut the grass, rake the leaves, chase the squirrels, fix the rooves, pick up garbage, collect the garbage, do all the recycling, marry off daughters, control financing and investments, chase the YP ad guys/girls away, work the counter, work the deliveries (when necessary), clean & treat 100% of our product, work the auctions, IT/computer repairs & updates, print the banners, built & finished our cottage, rebuild my outboard engines, fix & maintain our diesel equipment, scout for inexpensive fuels, and fart a lot!!
I can design & build a house or commercial building from scratch...couldn't design a dozen roses any better than Ryan...probably worse!!
And, in the "afternoons" I...............

Dunno Blue

seems the longer the shop is open the LESS I get to design. Sadly my talents make more in the actual running of the shop. If I get in two hours a day designing its a good day---I still do all the high dollar/special customer stuff, but I find hiring someone to do the everyday stuff- frees me to tend to the buying and other things where the money is--sad to say!

Job Description

HR, payroll, bills, mail, PR, customer contact, watching 2 year old run around shop, accounts receivable, statements, design, past due collection, showroom display, ordering weekly flowers, ordering baskets, containers, etc, quality and standard control, and then some!!

I can design, and like to design, but there are others in the shop who can also design, but no one else to handle the paperwork, payroll, etc although I am trying to get more cross training.

all of it

I have been doing it all, the designing, I love and bucket scrubbing is okay and the taxes, payroll, HR, bills, and bookkeeper I suck at. So I look foward to the day when designer is the ONLY title to my name. (except for the titles I already have, MOM, WIFE, DAUGHTER, SISTER, AUNT STEPH, HUNNY, SEX GODDESS, AND ANYTHING ELSE HE CAN THINK OF AT THE TIME.)
