Hi, have a order for Friday for a standing spray, the man its for is for a man that was larger than life, always wore a cowboy hat, loved PBR, etc. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas? The price is not a concern, they want it to be larger than life, like he was. Thanks in advance!

Have you thought of incorporating things related to rodeo? Maybe one of his hats and a length, not too long, of lasso and something else maybe? The lasso would be great to work into a standing spray. I would probably then go with western/country type foliage and floral like wheat, mullet and grasses, great time of the year for all of that. Maybe a wildflower, prairie type of look, sticks and sagebrush.

That is a fantastic idea tuberose.

Perhaps some of the floral material to add in might be some pincusion protea, or some of the different types of celosia, I would almost utilize some bear grass in some sweeping lines.

Utilizing some design techniques like grouping, segmenting, of material rather than salt and pepper look would also be appropriate.

Along with the other ideas, I would add sunflowers for impact and utilize bales of hay at the base of the stands legs. Take pictures and share...this sounds like a really cool memorial tribute.

Don't want to divert the thread, but have just gotten a request to do a casket spray in the design of the batman insignia. Yellow and black.
Holy Cripes, Batman.......
Any ideas?

Barb..what if you actually use a Batman Cape and then do the flowers in the "bat thingy-ma-bob" Probably hard to picture but using the cape worked into the piece might work...get a cape from Party supermarket...or my grandsons closet...lol

Larger than Life.....

There are quite a few of these in Texas.

We very often incorporate boots in wreaths. Hats sometimes. The best one I can remember was using an entire saddle in a casket spray.

We had a fellow die (heart attack) on the golf course last week. His playing partner ordered a spray with a golf club on it. The caption touched me...it said

"we'll finish that game as soon as I can get there."

All the best....

Take the Oasis Sculptsheet - Trace and cut out the Batman Logo on the Sculptsheet. Wire and Pick the shape vertically onto a brick of Oasis in the Casket saddle. Before you wire and pick the shape - Cover the sheet in black sprayed poms......Then do your casket design in yellow flowers.

Or - And this depends on your customer - Take a Batman theme mylar balloon and mount that into the center of the casket spray.

If money is no object and the guy was larger than life....and if available.

How about getting a saddle, bridle, cowboy hat, boots and a bale of straw, barbed wire, and arrange some Sunflowers, and other "outdoor" type flowers around this vinette.

Well, that is a great idea, but the funeral home has "problems" with creativity. The piece is being ordered by all of his co workers, not the immediate family, or I wouldnt have the funeral home issue.

If I want to do something in their funeral home, I can do it.

they may complain a bit, but they all know that if something you or I do that creates interest and comment IN THEIR funeral home, they look good.

sometimes being a Bull in a china shop is a good thing.

Give the customer what they asked for!

If the customer asked for it, I'd supply it whether the funeral home liked it or not! As long as it doesn't make a mess, which hay bales can... I'd do it. Hay bale with lasso across it hanging down under a cowbay hat. Add wild flowers of a prarie to it and you'll have a happy customer. Until we bought this shop 3 years ago everyone did standard sympathy arrangements. Now everyone talks about the "shop that does the customized" arrangements...and that's us. We have gotten a lot of customers we couldn't have had otherwise. The setting sun is the limit...push the limit and give the customer what they are paying for!

We USED to have the same problem with one of our funeral homes.....till one day the family got upset when I told them that the design they wanted would not be allowed with the current funeral home rules.

The family completed everything else, went to the funeral home, and literally raked the people there over the coals ....... until the funeral home people called us and said that we had permission to do whatever they wanted.

The kicker was that the family decided to be public and vocal about what they went through.....and shortly after that, all florists got a letter stating that although the'rules' stayed in effect, anytime a customer requested something unusual....just notify them so that they could be prepared for the unique and unusual.

We get requests for western items ALL the time... we live in cowboy country. We've done ropes, barbed wire, boots, chaps, spurs, hats, bridles, you name it. One of the most popular things we do (even for permanent pieces for homes) is a combination of a coil of rusty barbed wire and an entire rope (lariat), tied together and used as the base of a wreath (think grapevine wreath-like).

We also did this recently for the opening of a guest ranch:

And this was done for a gentleman who owned large ranches and another large business. Ordinarily we would not use antheriums for this, but his corporate colors were red, white and yellow and the antheriums were used throughout the service. The metal letters in the center is a branding iron.

Sounds like you will have fun with this one!

Ah! The creativity on this board!

Beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words! I'll try to post a picture of a barbed wire wreath soon.

We really need to get more photos of our western items. We do get requests all the time and it's always like starting from scratch to describe and sell them.

Does anyone else have a protocol for taking pictures of funeral pieces? It seems that families might be a bit more sensitive to the perceived "commercialism" than wedding customers. Everyone likes to see their wedding in albums, maybe not so much for funerals.

Any ideas?
