Inspiration for Funeral Piece

As promised, here's a photo of a barbed wire wreath that's in our shop right now. This one doesn't have the rope, but same idea.

What did you end up doing for the tribute? Did you take pictures? I'd love to see!

Well, here you go...

First, thanks so much for all the ideas and photos, they were greatly appreciated. I used a hanging rustic wall basket on a easel, I found a cowboy hat, rope, and my driver, Jackie came to the rescue once more, and walks in with a pair of childrens cowboy boots she found at a yard sale. We used Rose Hips, Wheat, Kale, Safflower, Solidago, Monte Casino, and everything else under the sun, and this is how it turned out..... and thanks again everyone!

more custom work

I was having problems starting a new thread, so I picked this one up again. My Batman spray turned out pretty neat. Sher gave me the idea for a Batman hood and cape and I did a two level oval shaped yellow and black Batman symbol piece.

My new challenge is this: as most people (I think all around the world) have heard, we had a police officer shot in Miami this week. I was contacted by the police dept tonight, for an arrangement to incorporate a replica of the officers badge. I am not sure of the size of the replica yet, I will be meeting with the Police dept tomorrow to make the arrangements for a Tuesday morning funeral. They saw a Maltese Cross I made for the FireFighters Union for September 11. I am not 100% sure what they want, how big, how much, etc, etc. Thought I would cast for ideas from the FC group.

Thanks

Barb

This day just gets more and more sad.

When you have an idea after the meeting tomorrow, you'll have a more clear picture of what is needed I'm sure. In the meantime, I have no doubt the trust in you is well placed.

We actually did one of these a few years ago for one of our local officers who had been shot - Since our officer badges are gold - we cut out the badge shape in styrofoam - took blocks of oasis, cut them into 1/2 inch thick slices and glued them dry to the foam base ( this was before sculptsheet ), then shaped the oasis and soaked the whole thing.....then we covered the majority of the badge form with gold button poms....and since the center of the badge was a palmetto palm tree - we used a darker tint to shade the buttons and made the fronds with the arching blooms of solidago.

We did not get into too fine a detail and we told the officers association this......going into too much detail will just mess up the piece.

We ended up as a result getting that department's account and up till the dept, was dis-banded by the governor......they were a group that ordered frequently and with high dollars - their minimum order with us was a hundred bucks plus delivery.

Thanks Rick and V,

I met with the Police representative. They have a large replica of the officers badge they want incorporated. My husband is building a large easel and framework for me. we will attach raquettes to the framework with the badge centered. A red, white and blue large arrangement on the easel will take main stage at the service. Will be picking up what flowers I can get for the color scheme first thing in the morning. I am more than a little nervous, this could be the beginning of a new account! I have another large wreath arrangement, incorporating the logo of another organization to do for the funeral at 11 am Tuesday.

Sometimes, I wonder why I say yes....... Love the challenge though - keeps the brain working. LOL!

Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Barb

Barb, whatever you decide to do will be fine. The most important people to please in this sad endeavour are family members and of course the police.

By the way, sympathies to your community on this tragedy.

One other suggestion.....We do a similar design several times a year for our chapter of VFW who have earned purple hearts.
It is always in silks as they have this displayed at our local war memorial wall. We elevate the purple heart logo a little bit above the level of the flowers.

I would suggest the same thing....Keeping the badge prominent with the flowers to accent.

Thanks again, V and Rick,

We are lifting the badge so that it is part of the flowers, but also framed by the flowers. This thing is going to be a monster as it will be on stage in a 4500 person arena and they want it big but tasteful. Will try very hard to make it respectful and beautiful. Will try to post pictures after it's finished.

Barb

Jusding by the size space it is going to be viewed in.......sounds like a monster is an understatement......I take it that they have given you plenty of bucks to make it outstanding.

And yes......when you get it done.....we wanna see pictures :)

Yeah, it's done!!.......

Well, it's over - a big deep breath and I'm happy it is over, but I did enjoy it after all (nervous, worried etc).

Sunday we designed (sort of) how we would do set up the large piece and we bought wood to make heavy duty easels. Monday morning at 7:30, I started calling vendors to find all the flowers and supplies I needed and within 1 1/2 hours was on my way to the wholesalers. I was back at the shop before noon with my little CRV filled to overflowing. Cut, hydrate and cut and hydrate. We had everything that was needed.

By 1:30 my husband brought the easels and other hardware to the shop so I could play with them while he went to the dentist. I set things up (prep takes such a long time, it seems), picked up a rental van, completed the other two pieces for the same funeral and got started on the 2 biggies. We were home by 10pm and unloaded the flowers into the house as the heat and humidity were far to high to leave all in the van. Down went the thermostat and off for some sleep.

Up at 6am, we reloaded the flowers after I adjusted some stems. Off to the location (local college arena) early as the funeral was at 11 am and many roads were closing early also. We drove over sidewalks and through the grass to get to the closest door (of course jolting and shaking the flowers). Inside we set up and I made last minute adjustments, changing out some flowers and re-inserting others. Everyone was happy. The big arrangement was on a 7' easel and the flowers topped out at about 9'. It was huge - the other piece was a 24" wreath pulled out and was seen on the front page of this mornings newspaper.

Off again, and back to the shop by 9:10 am to design and deliver to the 11 am funeral service of a very dear longtime customer. I think I need a vacation.....

Trying to attach pictures - the red Maltese cross was for 9/11 for the FireFighters Union and was what brought me the Police business.

I am already figuring out how to rework the big arrangement for, hopefully not the next time we may need it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you

Thanks to all of you - what a great support group and such an ego boost.

Sometimes I think the main reason I do this is because it makes me feel good, it sure doesn't pay me enough in hard cash. But, what it pays in warm fuzzies and good feelings is priceless..........
