I am finally putting a shopping cart on my website. How does everyone else handle sales tax and delivery charges. So far I haven't found a way to add my delivery charge (for local deliveries) after sales tax is added to the product. We have a pretty big delivery area so just one flat rate won't work without being way over priced for our in county local deliveries or way undercharging for longer runs (20 miles or more one way sometimes).

ideas? solutions? Help

Thanks everyone

I charge a flat rate on web orders of $9.95 for Regular Delivery, $19.95 Priority Delivery and $29.95 Rush Delivery (I'm amazed at how many folks pick the higher price).

These are delivery area wide, and I cost average them over the year, so that I make more on local than normal, and lose on long distance. Seems to work out.

As to the tax, in Michigan I charge tax on delivery.

Thanks Boss,

In Va. We charge it on products but not on services. Delivery etc.

What is the difference time wise in Priority and Rush?

I have been trying to figure out a way to time the delivery to zip code. Maybe I'm just making it too complicated.

Charge a higher blanket one and if it's too much put the $ in the flowers.

For Virginia Bob and others......I am not sure of the laws elsewhere.....but here in SC,

You need to collect sales tax on delivery charges. The reasoning the Local tax office applies is that delivery IS A CONDITION of the sale......much like the engraving of a trophy. The sale would not happen if delivery wasn't part of the sale.

What is the difference time wise in Priority and Rush?
Rush Shipping ($29.95)
Emergency rush same-day delivery within 2 hours, or delivery by 10AM on a future date.

Priority Service ($19.95)
Same-day delivery within 3 hours if ordered before 3PM, or guaranteed delivery before 12PM on a future date.

Standard Delivery ($9.95)
Same-day delivery if ordered before 1PM, or delivery between 9AM - 5PM on a future date.

Pick up in the store ($0.00)
Select this method for items you want to order online and pick up at Smiths. Free of course!

UPS, On gift items, Not applicable on flowers ($0.00)
Smith's offers UPS shipping on it's gift items (not flowers and plants) and if your gift is going outside of Midland, you should choose UPS, and the option will be offered on each individual item and UPS shipping price added. For local delivery of gift's please select standard delivery.

This is one of the hiccups with trying to use a standard shopping cart for a flower shop. There are unique needs that aren't always addressed by out of the box systems designed for straight transactional retail.

Sorry, RSEF - Florist 2.0 does have tax rates by state/provide but not by county. What does your POS do?

Thanks Bloomz,
The flat fee is what I have decided on. I am going to go with your surrent local (county wide) delivery. If I get a lot out of that area I might have to raise it a bit or figure out another way . It might never really be an issue.

Call it a $ERVICE CHARGE!

In NYS, we're required to collect the sales tax based on the point of delivery, not the POS.

That's when our shop is making the delivery ourselves.

Our local rate is 7.38% but if we're delivering our product into the City of Yonkers, we're required to collect their rate of 8.38%.

Long ago, and to avoid any future problems, we replaced the term DELIVERY CHARGE with SERVICE FEE and collected the sales tax accordingly.

Might be easier for your shopping cart to use that term rather than try to figure out a work around.

Cant comment on the tax but on my delivery i do three options that they can drop down on to,

widnes, £2
Rainhill, Great Sankey Penketh, £2.50
Warrington, Runcorn, St Helens £5.00

They choose the drop down box after they have decided the delivery date, only got three options but at the minute i dont need anymore.

Hope this makes sense but if not have a little look at my website to see how it works if not.

Delivery charge should change with distance, the farther the delivery location, the more the charge. You need to make the list of all zip codes where you deliver yourself. Then you need to decide delivery charges for those zip codes. I believe there will be a range (from $8 to $15).
And you can make 3 or 4 rates/level (delivery charge). You need to provide this information to your webmaster. He/She will make some changes in the coding so that on your website when the user fills the zip code, the respective delivery charge will appear.
Regarding tax, you need to inform the webmaster, if you want charge tax on delivery or not and he/she should be able to take care.
