Mikey, where have you been for the last 40 years? The socialists worked out of their headquarters in Saskatchewan for decades before jumping right over Alberta in their mad rush to capture and control BC, Ontario fell a number of years ago, Quebec crossed to the dark side in the last federal election (at least the Bloc was harmless outside of its own borders) and virtually every other province is losing the battle save one. good old Alberta. In fact the two loneliest guys at any Alberta party are the field rep from Teleflora and the local NDP candidate.

oh, I remember the ol' CCF very well, and the "backroom deals" that kept us from sliding into macro socialism, west of Ontario! The "aliens" I speak of "landing" are those, like Bob Rae, who "insulted" the party faithful, and then insulted them again, by becoming a liberal!
My fear is this....EVERY SINGLE "free" nation has been embroiled in some narcissistic adventure, that has put it in the path of total kibbutz style politics, and the more I live, the MORE I witness a society, that continues to implode, with it's INABILITY to grasp the true rationale of what social democracy is all about, and when the pendulum swings SO far to the left, that the "centre" is out of sight, THEN we see the true colours of ANY nation, and I "think" if the folks that inhabit North America DON'T revolt soon, WE'LL be the "new" communist type countries, where citizens stupidly "believe", that the GOVERNMENT is required to provide, at ANY cost!...The US is wanting to build a guarded "fence" between itself AND Canada...the "Iron Curtain" begins.....

The ironic part is could you imagine telling an American of the 1950's that
In 60 years
- The USA would be heavily in debt to China
- The President of the moment would focus much of his efforts on a national health plan that citizens would be forced to pay into and take part in.
- The government would have major ownership in two of the big three auto makers, ownership that actually let the President tellthe CEO OF GM to step down
- That China would take Americas place as the global economic powerhouse
- Most civic, state/provincial, and federal governments around the world are closing in on bankruptcy dud in a large part to financing social programs.

It gets better, Alberta has no Provincial (State) sales tax. It a place that the average guy does not take offense to being referred to as a redneck, in fact when I moved to Alberta (from BC, a place better known as Lotusland) 30 some odd years ago an Albertan described a "redneck" as a guy who works hard, pays his taxes, and minds his own business. We were the last province to get a seat belt law and just recently distracted driving legislation (cell phone, texting, etc) was passed.

We do have a couple of serious drawbacks, a summer that lasts 2 months in a perfect year, and a winter that lasts six where at times the mercury gets down to -40 degrees (but that shouldn't be a challenge for a Minnesota girl).

Camping season IS JULY 1st, and advisories go out the end of August to get your snow tires on!
Now, "rednecks" are those that to REFUSE to button up or wear a scarf.
TRUE, there IS no "sales tax" but, "red light" cameras, and speed traps "net" Alberta a 14% "speed tax"...it would be cheaper to CHARGE sales tax, ON TOP OF, the 5% Federal HST!!
The "C" Train, in Calgary, which is the local transit system on rails, does NOT have MANDATORY ticket check....it's largely the "honour system"......
Ain't it sweet in Edmonton, where the folks are SO FRIENDLY, they put in "free" electricity posts EVERYWHERE, so you can plug in your car, or motorhome, or your electric shaver!
Calgary N.E. is "brown" year round....it's a cultural thing......
The city between Calgary AND Edmonton was named after a wife shouted "YOU'RE driving through a RED, again, DEER!!
The "foothills" aren't JUST foothills, they're 3450 of them high above sea level, and people "jockey" to find a place to park at the local "stupid store" for their groceries!

Don't pay any attention to Mikey's negativity, in their neck of the woods they still believe Ontario is the center of Canada's universe. I have bumped into many Ontarians (is there such a word") at the airport who will tell you how wonderful a place Ontario is (a virtual "Garden of Eden" per say) while they are waiting for a plane to take them to Alberta for work.

They can be a strange bunch out there, in fact most advocate a weak Canadian dollar so that they can sell the goods they manufacture down to the states, when the dollar is at par they can't compete.

A decade or so ago when their largest city Toronto received a bit of snow the Mayor wanted the federal government to send in the army to clear the streets, out in Alberta we simply get out our shovels and snowblowers and go to work.

Their provincial government is always spending more than it has and owes up the wazoo, Alberta on the other hand owes no money and in fact has a bank account that is the envy of virtually every other province.

As for his suggestion that the red light cameras and photo radar more than make up fro a lack of sales tax......Mikey , Mikey, Mikey.... if you wish to compare these "fines" to a sales tax that is your prerogative. But if that is the case I would suggest that these would be considered the ultimate in the way of a "voluntary tax" as only those that make the conscious decision to speed or run a red light are required to submit the "tax". Remember, out here in Alberta our government still likes to let the individual make their won decisions about personal behavior whenever possible, and BTW both of the fines you address are "Civic" issues, not Provincial ones.

In return we suffer through some crappy weather, but rather than ask the federal government to address the issue we fend for ourselves and simply buy decent coats and outer wear.

Don't say anything but I think Mikey is actually a want-to-be Albertan. Unfortunately I don't know if we have room for him here anymore as so many from his province have moved here over the years. In fact amongst the motivators for these moves were, lower home prices, lower cost of living, no sales tax, lower personal provincial tax, and plenty of work (with some of the highest wages in the country). Unfortunately all things that are in short supply in Ontario, but on the bright side is Ontario does have their Stanley Cup hopefuls the Toronto Maple Leafs.
