Optimizing Videos for YouTube

Greg Jarboe, the original Godfather of Video SEO and online PR, has a column on Search Engine Watch with some great tips on using the YouTube Keyword Tool to make sure you get as many eyeballs as possible on your latest YouTube contributions.

Remember, users are searching for video content, so they’re less likely to look for something to buy on YouTube than they are on a search engine. Users search for topics related to what entertains them, so choose your keywords accordingly:

  • Names (celebrities)
  • Titles (movies, shows)
  • Quotes
  • Actions/verbs
  • Objects in the video (cars, etc.)
  • Emotions (funny, hilarious)

When choosing your keywords, think about the trends in online video overall, plus trends on YouTube (hot topics, political awareness, celebrity gossip, and popular videos).

It looks like Greg will be following up with more tips, so keep an eye on his column.

Bonus: Small Biz & Local SEO guy, Don Campbell, has posted another cool tip to get YouTube traffic back to your site.

  2. It is very important for businesses to use popular keywords on their video in order for your YouTube videos to be discovered and viewed many times in a short span of time.

Catchy tags that people usually search would help out to build some awareness on your videos and channel.

    Thanks for the advice!

  3. Greg Jarboe’s post is very eye opening for me as I’ve never really thought about Youtube like a search engine. I haven’t considered the implications of this and how to plan videos accordingly.

I will have to take these things into account when I make my next video. Thinking about it now, I would love to see a video that teaches me how to raise brand awareness on Youtube. A strategic plan of doing this would be very helpful.
