It's your right to jump in front of a moving train too... doesn't directly impact me, so why should I care. Of course don't forget those it does affect. But hey, it's your right... so go ahead.

Someone wants to smoke, then fine do it... just not around me, because it does impact me.

Lori, how is your husband doing? I haven't seen any updates lately.

Hubby is doing terrific. He went back to work in two weeks time. He followed his liquid diet for 1 month without any problems. He eats like a normal 150lb person now. I am totally amazed at the small consumption of food and he does not feel deprived, hungry or otherwise bad in any way. He has lost almost 50lbs 2 months post-op and 75 since this time last year. He is down 4 pant sizes and we can't keep up with his wardrobe. He is off his diabetes meds and looks like the blood pressure ones will be going next...He has not had any problems with foods yet....

:) Well done! Please give him my best... and continued success.

I don't smoke either, but I don't mind being around it, expecially if I decide to go into a bar. I expect it there.

Just on a side note, if everyone stopped smoking where would the state and federal get the money they collect from taxes?

An example that I have just from this afternoon. My parents own a market, deli. They sell cig. I do all their bookwork for them, as they don't know the computer well. I had to fill out a 2007 census form today. It asked what dollar amt went to excise tax from the sell of their cigerettes. They are a small deli, only sell cigs because they are open until midnight, their's are the highest priced in town so not to many people buy from them regularly, this is a very small amt to sell a year. 1695 cartons of cig a year, less them 15 cartons a month. The taxes they collected on it were $20,100. Can you imagine what the big stores sell and pay in taxes. Without that tax we would all be screaming because our state and fed taxes would take a gigantic jump. They would have to get the money from somewhere. As much as people that don't smoke complain, I bet they would scream louder if they had to pay double what they do now on taxes.

Just found this information interesting as I have been dealing with this dumb paperwork all afternoon.

I have now been tobacco free for 31 Days....approx.

I lust for the day when NavyBrat, Jeannieballarinie, and all the other cool chicks stand next to us and blow cigarette smoke all over us. But I ain't smokin cigarettes no more no matter what.

All the best

YAY YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have fallen off the wagon a bit here and there so my claim is that I'm workin' at it..................LOVE bein' a "cool chick" tho!!!!!!!........
:spintongu
Well, mabey a cool almost no-smoke chick....I honestly have NEVER done anything so difficult!
Thanks for the smile!

Vikki, they'll find another way to tax.

Ontario is smoke free in all public places. It's lovely to go into a bar or restaurant and be able to breathe.

Jeannie... keep trying... figure out the triggers and work towards eliminating them. Drink pails of water, walk, anything to move you forward to freedom from those filthy things.

What am I missing here? Are you saying that the taxes they collect are more important than people living or dying from complications of smoke? Did it occur to you that the taxes might not be that high if we didn't have to take care of all those that choose to smoke and cannot afford to pay their medical bills? I'm not believing I am reading this post.

Not wanting to send up a smoke screen.

This is the second thread in a little while where the H@t$ word has been in it. Can we agree not to use this word or limit its use to the Political Section.

To put that amount of energy into a thought and express it using that "H" word is not good for any of us.

I do not like cigarettes either. Let us clear the air and go the dictionary and come up with another word than H@t$.

CB, you miss nothing.

Politicians love "Sin Taxes" After they lose the revenue on cigarettes, you can bet they will go after Alcohol.

The interesting dynamic in all this is that John McCain's wife, Cindy, is one of the largest Anheuser-Busch Beer Distributors in the Unitied States.

Now, since more states are going smoke free, the pols need more money, with McCain as a POTUS, the Pols will not get their hands on beer taxes.

So what to do??????

Hmmmmmmmmm.................

I think a good step would be to allow more US citizens to keep their own money.

How about cutting spending?

Oh wait we can't cut too much because Pres Carter implemented Base Line Budgeting back inthe late '70's. I hope he gets tagged with that debacle of policy program by historians 200 years from now.

so now what....?

expand the economy!!!!! The u.s. needs new entreprenuership. Small business's being developed, mid size business' growing and large business' growing globally.

Hmm... who would have thought that a liberal policy such as anti smoking would lead to such capitalist growth! ;)

joe

p.s. I was just having some fun with this tonight, but I woulld hope you all think about it. thanks. j

It's just legalized dope is all.

And take it from someone who knows - alcohol is the worst dope of all. Nicotine running a very close second.

I think either they should ban them all or legalize them all. This double standard is ridiculous given the death rates. Alcohol kills exponentially more than all illegal drugs combined.

Yeah and then factor in all the innocent deaths cause by alcohol and you really have some numbers...

Remember I don't smoke. I am just saying, there all kinds of things that cost us money.. Obesity is on the rise.. it is the #1 concern today. Our youth is fat, and getting fatter, in all states. Alcoholics, crack heads, cocaine freaks, gamblers included,,, they all cost us money.

But you want to blame it all on the smokers. I just think that you need to look at the entire picture of what is happening in the world today. What addiction really is. It is not only the person that smokes cigerettes that cost us money.

There isn't a sin tax on a donut, but obesity, and the diseases that it causes are beginning to cost us, the people, just as much as the horrible addicted smokers and drug addicts. And, I won't even go into the subject of alcohol.

This is just my humble opinion,,, don't fry me please.

PS,, I'm not a skinny minny, I could stand to lose a few pounds myself, and I do like a good cold beer now and then.

Vikki, the point I believe, is that someone else's addiction to food isn't going to give me cancer or respiratory failure or other second hand smoke related diseases.

Carol is right on the money with her take on the post about taxes. Health care costs are through the roof because so much is used to takes care of the long term affects of smoking. By the way, sin taxes in Ontario are huge.

Doug I don't ofter use the "H" word (it took me a while to figure out what word that was in the thread), but I well and truly do hate the fact that my daughter smokes. I don't hate her, just the smoking habit she has. Of course I'm only the Mom so my say means not much, but I wish and pray she would quit.

How often are we asked as florists to not send latex balloons to schools and other institutions due to a student, patient, or resident is alergic to latex.

It happens.

I don't know and to be honest I don't understand the point. Latex allergies do not equate to cigarettes... unless of course someone is smoking while blowing up the latex with the helium tank. :)

By the way, here, latex balloons are verbotten in hospital settings.

Just for interest sake... when I quit I tried the patch for about a week and a half. As I had already cut down on my smoking by half the pharmacist put me on the the second level, so the nicotine amounts were smaller, thank God. At anyrate, the dreams were bizarre and the last straw for me was an entire night spent driving from Korea to Martha's Vineyard with Walter Cronkite (he promised me a sail).

I quit the patch, quit the weed on my own.

Quit-Smoking Drug May Raise Suicide Risk
FDA asks maker of Chantix to revise warning on product label
By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Feb. 1 (HealthDay News) -- There's increasing evidence that the smoking-cessation drug Chantix is linked to serious "neuropsychiatric" side effects, including agitation, depressed mood and even suicide, U.S. health officials said Friday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has asked Chantix's manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., to make the warning about these potential problems more prominent on prescribing information and on the drug's label. The agency is also working with Pfizer to produce a Medication Guide for patients, officials said.

"We have become increasingly concerned as we have seen a number of compelling cases that truly look as if they are the result of exposure to the drug and not to other causes," Dr. Bob Rappaport, director of the FDA's Division of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Rheumatology Products, said during an afternoon teleconference.

"These cases involve abnormal behaviors, changes in mood, and suicidal ideation and suicide," Rappaport said.

The FDA knows of 491 cases of suicidal behavior associated with Chantix, said Dr. Celia Winchell, a team leader in the FDA's Division of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Rheumatology Products.

"Of these, 420 are from the United States," Winchell said. "There are 39 that involve completed suicides, 34 in the United States."

According to Pfizer, 5 million patients have taken Chantix, whose generic name is varenicline.

Friday's warning follows a Nov. 20 FDA statement that the agency was "evaluating post-marketing adverse event reports on Chantix related to changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and actual suicidal behavior."

At that time, Pfizer said there had never been a cause-and-effect relationship shown between Chantix and these symptoms. The company also said that part of the problem may be due to nicotine withdrawal.

Last month, Pfizer agreed, after consulting with the FDA, to update packages of Chantix sold in the United States to more prominently display a warning that users should be monitored for suicidal behavior, depressed mood, and other mental health symptoms.

The FDA approved Chantix in May 2006 as a smoking-cessation drug. It acts in areas of the brain affected by nicotine and may ease withdrawal symptoms and block the effects of nicotine if users resume smoking.

On Friday, FDA officials advised patients to tell their doctor about any history of psychiatric illness before starting Chantix. The drug can cause current psychiatric illness to get worse even if it is under control. Chantix may also cause the recurrence of an old psychiatric illness, the officials warned.

Patients should also report changes in mood and behavior to their doctor. Symptoms to look out for include anxiety, nervousness, tension, depressed mood, unusual behaviors and thinking about or attempting suicide, the FDA officials said.

In most cases, these symptoms developed while taking Chantix, but they can also appear after stopping the drug, the officials noted.

"We are continuing with the review process over the next several months as we try to pin down to what extent these problems are being seen with Chantix," Rappaport said.

Vivid, unusual, or strange dreams may occur while taking the drug. Patients may also experience impaired ability to drive or operate heavy machinery, the officials said.

Hi V, my point is Carol is highly allergic to nicotine as are many many people to latex.

One of my wholesale saleman's wife is so allergic to latex, that he has to shower and change clothes before he walks into the house, they have a grocery store (Dierbergs, large STL store) in their neighborhood that is Latex free, just for her.

when they go on vacation, they go to somewhere in FL and use the same hotel every year because that hotel will completely clean the room and be totally latex free so she can be on vacation.

Cigarette allergies as I learned from Carol can be just as serious as latex allergies and the public should make accomodations for these maladies.

That was my point.

Actually, latex allergy is very serious. When a latex balloon is around it can emit fumes that make the allergic person react never mind if it pops they don't even have to touch it from what I understand, just like cig smoke with people allergic to nicotine..
