FlowerChat Needs a Logo - and you can help!

We're opening up an "American Idol" style contest to all the members of FlowerChat. We have some pretty creative people here, so I'm excited to see what submissions we'll get!

Once we have received all the submissions, we'll divide them into 2-3 groups. Each group will be voted on for one week, with the top selections making it through to the final showdown.

Contest timeline:

  • submission deadline, May 28th
  • voting for group 1 on the 29th of May to 5th of June
  • voting for group 2 on the 6th - 12th
  • voting for group 3 on the 13th - 19th (if needed)
  • final showdown either 13th-19th or 20th to 26th
Prizes:

  • 1st place: A free customized video ad from Strider ($300), links from the Real Florist Blog and the Strider blog, and the unended sense of satisfaction that comes from seeing your artwork displayed every time you come to FC
  • 2nd & 3rd place: TBD - but there will certainly be Casino cash in the mix, and probably links
Guidelines:

  • Submissions must be sent to [email protected] by May 28th
  • Please send jpg images for judging
  • Must have a high-res version (PSD, AI, EPS, etc) available for use if you win
  • Limit of 3 submissions per person
  • No copyrighted contents - please don't steal someone else's work then hand it over to FC -> we don't need the lawsuit
  • Voting will be done on FC during the specified times
  • Please keep the FlowerChat colour scheme in mind. If your design hurts our eyes when used in combination with the FC theme it's not likely to win
This thread is open for discussion, questions, clarification, and so on.

Very cool idea *but* May 28th deadline?
Might want to drag that out a bit longer, May being what it is for most flowershops....

Hmmm...wheels are spinning already.

Is there a size limit.. like 300 x 150 pixels? Can you give us a ball park please? I am assuming long and skinny.

We're pretty open on format, just keep in mind where it will be placed.

I'm going to be working on one as well, but here we may have a problem.....the highest resolution I have on my graphics programs is .png......Will that be enough?

PNG is a file type, not a resolution.

It's likely that any graphics program can produce a high-res image when we need it. Just submit a web-ready image for viewing.

Ok I'm out of the contest. I don't have any cool graphics programs. Plus I'm more of a sculpture/3d artist...

Hey Ryan, sending you an animated gif, is that ok?
An animated GIF might not make for a great logo, but we can put it to the vote. If you're designing one, please create a print-ready version as well.

Thanks for the info and quick reply. Not real sure of colors either...but I'll send what I have. I think my gif could be animated or not.

You can get FREE software to create your logo's.

I've been working on a project with my son, so I've downloaded several free art programs lately and tried them out. My favorite is paint.net, it's free and an extension of Microsoft's Paint, so it has a familiar feel, if you have ever used paint.

I have also tried Gimp, Artweaver and Coffeecup, but liked paint.net the best.

Also, as a bonus, the magic wand is easy to use to get rid of backgrounds. If you like your flower images that way for your website, just select wand, click on background then hit delete. Yippee!

Love it! People complaining about how other people don't have enough to do, wringing their hands over who should be allowed here and how often they should post, and what they should post about... give 'em a project! HAHAHAHA just like little kids! Awesome.

I'm on it. This is exactly the kind of stuff I like to do for fun! :ryan:

Sher,
I don't have any pictures. Most of my work I have given away to family, friends or people who have influenced my life. I went through a black pottery stage, LOVED IT and ended up giving my biggest piece to my french instructor at the time.

The last project I did was in 2002 for the Trakehner horse breeding farm I was working at. I did a bas relief of their main stallion. It was a gift since I knew he was getting older in age and wanted to give the owner something that was everlasting...representative of him. When I presented it to her, she loved it and was very happy with how I captured his likeness. He died later that year.
I haven't touched clay in 7 years!!! Thank you for asking though. I do miss it......:)

That's a shame..you should always keep pictures of all creative work that you do..even when you do window scenes as you never know when it will come in handy for a future employment opportunity. I hope you take pictures of the floral arrangements that you do/did so any prospective employers have something to view. I have hired designers based on what their portfolio's looked like. Just a thought
