I pledge allegiance to the flag with my hand on my heart as taught as a child.
I do not always sing the National Anthem nor place my hand on my heart when it is being sung - at NASCAR races - the only place I've been where it's been sung.

I think there are lots of false issues being dragged around and posted everywhere on the internet.......

Slippy slope..

On one hand it's easy to dismiss this as just one mans own beliefs or lack of them, depending which way you choose to lean...but in the UK,we are way ahead of you(for once),we as citizens are frowned upon for showing any national spirit or belief(and im not talking National frontesque proportions here)simple waving of flags can be deemed inappropriate by local councils or government...we are in a situation of our leaders makings, the fear of in some way upsetting or infringing on others "rights" not to see our proud flag waving patriotic outpourings, outweighs in our leaders eyes our right to be British, the only time we are openly allowed to show any patriotism is if it is linked with a sporting event(football world cup or Euro tournament,Cricket world cup,or Rugby World cup) GO FIGURE..

Funny, my husband and I were watching the start of the football game that was in London this past weekend. They played our anthem and then " God Save the Queen" Every Brit in the Stadium was singing like their life depended on it and sadly we have lost that here in our country. To me, you either stand for something or you stand for nothing. When I see people standing, saluting our flag, putting their hand over their heart it gives me a feeling of safety and security that someones got my back. It makes me feel that even though that stranger and I may have differences of opinion our common ground that they think highly enough of our country to show it respect, therefore respecting their countrymen as well.
I always told my children that LOVE isn't a feeling, it is an ACTION.
You can tell someone you love them all you want, if your actions are contrary to your words, they mean nothing.
A person can beat the crap out of someone and say they love them all they want, but their actions speak otherwise...therefore mean nothing.
How one conducts themselves says volumes about who they are...and is the only way anyone..a lover, a friend, a stranger, a voter can even begin to determine "what's in you."

Thank you for a most excellent post !

To ignore such things as that is to ignore the bigger picture. all it takes is a bit fo research to find out the many times he's done this. It's not that hard!

Please be careful what you vote for...

Sorry Aileen, but I guess it is difficult to find cause I keep coming across that one picture over and over again. I'm not trying to stir the pot but to better help me come to a conclusion about this. One picture doesnt do it for me.

Obama served as a community organizer for a group of Christian churches in Chicago when he was just out of college. He ran Project Vote, taught United States Constitutional law for twelve years, served in the Illinois State House and is , of course, a United States Senator. John McCain, as everyone knows, served his country in the military and in politics. Both men have spent their ENTIRE adult lives serving Country and Community! I think it is ludicrous to question the patriotism of either one of them.

Vote for the candidate who best represents your stand on the issues.

Gigi,

That's all I can find too.. that one time when he was lined up with several other people... he stood there with his hands clasped in front of him... I can't find a second incident. You'd think if there were MULTIPLE instances, they'd be easy to find. I DO find multiple instances of him PUTTING his hand over his heart.

Well,

I have much respect for my country and all that that implies.

I have much love for the Bill of Rights. That's the first the first 10 amendments of the Constitution of the United States of America, for those of you who don't know.

The first amendment in particular acknowledges that we all possess the freedom of expression. It states very clearly that we are born with that right.

I support the rights of any person to choose to hold their hand over their heart or not.

The worst thing that can happen to The USA is for it's citizens to ignore the rights of others.

You may not agree with someones opinion, how they dress, how they live, how they talk, how they think, etc.

The most Patriotic thing you can do is recognize that all US citizens possess those rights.

We should all be grateful that we live in a country where you can CHOOSE to stand up or not.

I live in a homeowners association that has bylaws and rather strict codes for what your home and yard can and can not look like. Last year the board of directors passed a directive that it is not acceptable to have a flag pole in your yard with an American flag on it. I drove by the Association presidents house the other day and she has a "vote for McCain/Palin" sign in her yard.

OMG she must be a closet Obama support or worse yet a socialist....

I think that is RIDICULOUS!! Not being allowed to fly the flag....slowly...ever so slowly America is falling at the hands of its' own countrymen.

AND, you would "CHOOSE" NOT to stand up BECAUSE??
It doesn't matter why people make the choices they make.

What matters is that they have the RIGHT TO MAKE THE CHOICE IN THE USA.

That is my point. The right to choose, to make our our decisions, to become whatever we want, whenever we want is so valuable.

Our forefathers saw that. It was so important to them they they made sure that was Our #1 right as human beings that they recognized in The Bill of Rights.

So long as a person is not harming another, we have the right to do what we want.

Remember "The right to swing my arms ends where another's nose begins"

As I said, we may not all agree BUT we really need to respect and support the rights of others to choose to live their life the way they want. This country was founded on it.

I have friends whose religions do not allow them to stand for the NA.

They don't celebrate birthdays and holidays either.

and that is their right, which I would never infringe upon.

Wouldn't it be lovely if our choices mattered?

It's a charade, Shannon......

And the reason why it doesn't matter more and more Bloomz is because someone's opinion becomes law. That's the true problem
