I like movies, but, I am an avid reader of books. I have yet to find a movie as good as the book.

There are several movies mentioned that the original books were wonderful, but, the movie just was not as good. Ex. Pride and Predudice, The Godfather, etc.

I am almost to the point where if I read a great book....I just don't see the movie because it is anti climatic.

This is a very tough question...because the instant I submit, I know I will think of a few that I forgot.

Here goes...

The Goonies
The Princess Bride
Death at a funeral (funniest movie I have EVER seen!!!)
Sleepless in Seattle (yeah, I know)
Love Actually

ditto that. Silence of the Lambs is a good example.

Looks like the Princess Bride is a popular choice, I agree, that's a good one.

Gotta agree w/Airplane, too. Classic!

And, National Lampoon XMas Vacation is a required viewing every year, as is Elf.

Hard to choose:
You could really do this in different catagories: best christmas movies, black & white, baseball movies, animated..etc

off the top of my head:

Singing in the rain
That Thing you Do ( The Oneders!!)
Out of Africa
Phantom of the Opera ( new version)
Forrest Gump
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Rear Window
A League of Their Own
People will Talk (Cary Grant)
Anything with Jerry Lewis.. ( Haaa)

Ok I'll stop now

Star Wars (the Original)
The Great Escape

okay

I am adding another: ANIMAL HOUSE!

Man I can't believe none of you included my top pick.

The Matrix
( I mean come on didn't you go to movie theatre at least 10 times like my wife did and watch it?)

Independance Day (Again I can't believe its not mentioned)
Young Guns
Top Gun
Armageddon

Linhs Picks

The Matrix
Clueless
5th Element
Starward VI Return Of The Jedi
Pretty Women.

There are so many listed now, that are my favorites too!

ditto that. Silence of the Lambs is a good example.
I read that in two nights - it was the first book I read that I could not put down, except to go to work. Agreed that the immense details in books rarely are included enough in movies.
Quigley Down Under
Quigley! I love that too.

Independance Day (Again I can't believe its not mentioned)
Young Guns
Top Gun
Armageddon

Loved all the above as well. Didn't see The Matrix as it really didn't/doesn't interest me. :)

Like guns much?? LOL
Your answer was funny and, yes I loved The Matrix.
I love a whole bunch (flower humor) of the moves others have posted.

Friday night is Movie night!! - I watch them at least 3 times (3 fridays) in order to see the entire move as I fall asleep ....alot

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Love Audrey, Tiffany's and New York
Gone with the Wind - wanted to be Scarlett O'Hara
Citizen Kane - amazing sets and ending
2001 a Space Odessy - never really understood it but great anyway
anything that makes my cry at the end
All the barking mad Austin Powers movies
oh I could go on and on and on

But you know the sad thing is I can remember the oldies but can't remember what I saw last week with my girls ... either failing memory due to old age or they just don't make them like they used to!!!!!!!

So many but here are 5

To Kill a Mockingbird
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nets
Fargo
Pappillion
The Princess Bride

The best novel I've read in a long time was "The Kite Runner" but the movie didnt hold up the the book.
